There are guilds that are active on live server like Jesters in Norrath on live and there is some server like Aradune that are fully populated ..
There are also group chats on facebook that could help you to find guilds who are active.
EQ is not dead and for what i can see after 20 years of play it’s on despite some people who says the contrary.
To test it, create a free account on live like antonius bayle or Fiorinae Vie and you will be able to see.
Aradune is a paid account access.
So I should not waste my time with this mmo then?
However, the older servers will definitely give new players the impression that the game is dead. It's not. It's simply that most of the people on the older servers have max characters and are generally doing the latest content (when they aren't farming older content for clickies that still haven't been nerfed or removed).
As a newer player, unless you have friends on older servers or are personable enough to charm your way into a guild, you'll want to try out either Firiona Vie or Progression servers.
You often run into people that have friends that left the game for good. Those friends will often give their accounts to the people that still play. You run into this a lot on the older servers.
This is just one scenario.
There are other people that still love the game enough to run multiple accounts. You'll find tons of EQ vets that won't be in top end guilds anymore. In many cases their guild doesn't exist anymore, and instead of migrating to another top guild, they prefer to do their own thing but usually end up joining a family guild for the benefits. They'll do their own thing for the most part but will support the family guild if needed.
Things like the open raid channel exist if you want to occasionally do raids to stay current without the baggage that comes with being part of a dedicated raid guild.
