People are playing games like mario and call of duty on a guitar hero guitar..
You aren't going to be anywhere near as capable using an 8-12 button controller instead of the dozens of options you have with a keyboard and infinite options you have with the intuitive and quick action of mouse clicks.
You can't compare the Steam Controller built into the Steam Deck with any other controller.
Far far beyond the extra controls you have (like trackpads', back buttons and gyro) various powerful features like mode shifting (pressing one button makes all the other buttons do something else and you can do multiple of them) and customable pop-up menus makes them extremely configurable and powerful.
I'm not playing an MMORPG right now but if I were I'd want to do it on a Steam Controller.
Incidentally it says EQ is rated as 🚫 Unsupported on Deck, does anyone know why? I was really just curious I just found out this was available here.
To be fair, people play everquest with mouse only...
Getting used to having too many "macros"
I've only scratched the surface of it but Valve's "Steam Input" software should cover all that. It appears pretty amazing and easy to use and will let you program any controller.
Also there are community profiles you can download (and upload) so any reasonably popular title will likely already have a few good community profiles.
So you don't have to start from scratch. I mean you could use a downloaded profile as is or tweak it. And if you think your improvements are worthwhile you can upload for others to try.
Also devs sometimes make their own official Steam Input profiles too.
How did you get it to work? I installed it on my Deck and I get just a white screen, which I think is the launcher not loading properly so I can't log in or see where the start button is or anything. Tried Proton-GE, multiple versions, Proton-Experimental, Proton-Hotfix, Proton 7, Proton 6, etc.
Actually just found someone that did the work:
https://www.redguides.com/community/threads/everquest-on-a-steam-deck.84190/
Gonna summarize their work here as to what I did:
1) Install EQ on the Deck
2) Get a console on the Deck, I ssh'd to my machine and ran the following:
$ flatpak install com.github.Matoking.protontricks
$ alias protontricks='flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks'
$ protontricks 205710 d3dx9_43
$ protontricks 205710 corefonts
3) In the Launch Options for the game add: %command% --disable-gpu
This allows the launcher to show up and helps with Lutris or anyone running EQ on Linux desktop.
Simply adding the "%command% --disable-gpu" to the game options in Steam, worked on my POP OS Linux box when I was stuck at the loader with a white screen. It had me stumped for hours.
