For actual full solo play, I'd say necro mage bard rogue ranger or maybe SK.
Necro and mage are high end powerhouses because both are high DPS classes with strong pet tanks and adding a healer mercenary makes them pretty much a group to themselves with necro having the slight advantage with crowd control and pulling abilities.
Bard and rogue both have strong abilities for getting around. Bard is the fastest running class in game and eventually gets invis vs. undead and live (the 2 primary invis types) to be able to walk around mostly safe and also is sought after for grouping for their buff songs, crowd control and pulling. Rogue has the best invis in game that 99.99% of the time nothing sees through and they're also one of the higher DPS classes with some insta-kill abilities against the right enemy types.
Ranger also has some insta-kill ability against the same enemy types as rogue as well as a diverse lineup of skills for melee and ranged and pulling and crowd control.
SK is a tank class so has very high survivability as well as some nice area type damage, snares, both types of invis (typically only 1 at a time) as well as pulling skills like necro.
Ultimately though, pick a class that sounds fun to you and play it a bit. If you're not liking it try another class. It's ultimately more about how much fun you have playing than what anyone says is an UB3R class to play. You can make things work with jsut about any class and the right skill playing it. And there is always the option to play alts and surpass your original main if you like them more.
Mage and Necro are strong, but you have another pet class to pick from. Beastlord. It's a monk/shaman hybrid. You get various pets to pick from based on your race. Bear, tiger or alligator. Most people go with the ogre for the frontal stun immunity because you often tank alongside your pet. You get feign death (play dead) to drop aggro and you get those juicy shaman spells that can buff your and your allies and cripple your enemies. Definitely a beginner option.
I don't recommend ranger as a solo class unless you really like using a bow. Solo-wise, you'll be relying on it heavily by making use of an alternate ability (AA) called Headshot. Headshot is very niche. It's limited to humanoid only and limited to a level that's below you based on the Headshot rank you currently have. You'll need quite a few AA's to get the most out of it because at higher levels, npc's will require multiple headshots to kill. Not only did the devs nerf the crap out of the skill, but they've limited the mobs that it works on and you often have competition from others trying to do the same thing.
If, after playing awhile, you want more of a challenge (or you've just become twisted), I can recommend no class higher than an enchanter. You can charm npc's that make mage, necro and beastlord pets look and fight like Pee Wee Herman. But it comes with a fair amount of risk. You need more AA's than most to make this class shine, but the fun factor can't be beat. You'll basically be a caster version of Conan the Barbarian. Ripping and tearing your way through the zone while everyone watches in awe and tries to stay out of your way in case that walking death machine you call a pet breaks charm and all hell breaks loose.
