Game looks neat, but what other games is this like?
I am interesting in buying this when it releases, but I'm not sure what type of games to compare it to. Looks similar to maybe Witcher 3? Elden Ring was fun, but the world could be kinda empty and became a bit of a slog. How does this compare to Baldur's Gate III (I know it's not turn-based).

well, the first dragon's dogma.. (well dragon's dogma: dark arisen really, the first one with the DLC)
it should be pretty cheap as well..
as for how it plays.. i'd say watch some videos (there isn't a thole lot yet, and shouldn't be any spoilers really) much more action combat then anything turn based..

The pawn system is pretty unique, so the game most like it is the first game like lobos mentioned.

You make your main character and your main pawn, then you can hire 2 additional pawns to form a full party. Story-wise it's sort of in-between a game like Dark Souls and a full crpg/rpg like the games you mentioned.

There may be some story between your main character and your main pawn but the rest of your party is usually there for the adventure mechanically, and you can swap them out. There probably won't be the sort of character to character dialog in your party that you'd expect from a game like BG3.

Maybe something like Witcher 3, but you have a full action rpg party that works together, and with very dynamic monster fights (with environmental interaction, monster climbing and so on) and with more RPG progression mechanics and gear.

not really any of them, certainly not baldur's gate 3, if you want character development and story like BG3 you will be sorely disappointed.

The closest would be skyrim except far better combat and even less RPG then skyrim already is.

I've been looking for games like the first one for years. If there are any, I'd love to know. So far, there aren't any that are like it except in the more generalised senses. Ie, game with classes, or games with big monsters, but nothing like the totality of what DD is. My comparisons below are going to be versus the first game since the second one isn't even out yet:

The WItcher 3 had a better plot, but I'm going to go against the majority and say that the Witcher 3 gameplay wasn't all that good.

I haven't played Eldin Ring, but it seems to play enough like Dark Souls that Eldin Ring is probably a lesser game in terms of complexity of combat mechanics, but Eldin Ring is probably better in terms of getting around a large map (teleports, mounts, not reducing your speed based on how much you carry).

I haven't played BG3 nor have I watched much beyond short clips, so I have no idea how it would relate to that.

Dragons Dogma, and probably this new sequel as well, had tons of little mechanics and things to learn. Like the height and weight of your character moderately affected your stamina usage and regen. Or that throwing a pawn into the brine would put everything not-equipped in their inventory into your inn inventory. Or that many attacks can hit multiple limbs on a big enemy in order to do it's damage multiple times over in a single swing. Or that the height of your character could also lock you out of some options; there were a few holes that you could only access if you were super small, while some terrain edged couldn't be jumped to and grabbed if you were super small. Enough weight on a griffon will cause it to tumble to the ground. Ogres got into a rutt if they detect women and target women first, while Elder Ogres do that for men. Etc.

Apart from the extremely broad genre of open world real time RPGs there is no game like Dragon's Dogma. If you want to know what this game is then play the first one.

Middle Earth: Shadow of War. Orcs = pawns.
