Worth it?
Hi all,

I really enjoyed playing Dark Arisen and was keen to get DD2 when it first came out but held off to see reviews. Suffice to say, they didn't present the game in the best light.

After almost 2 years of being out and currently on discount, is it worth grabbing? I was hoping to wait until DLC came out like dark arisen, however I'm not sure if they're planning to make one at this point.

What are the pros and cons of DD2 compared to dark arisen and is it worth it?

Thanks in advance

How's the gameplay and combat, better, worse or the same as the first?
It's broken af and they aren't fixing it.
It isn't broken. Sheesh.

One thing a lot of reviewers seemed to miss was the exploration aspect. *IF* you don't just read up on everything in the world, there are several interesting things to discover.

The original framerate issues are still there, but not terribly bad anymore. Except for a couple of strange spots out in the wilderness, I had no problem ignoring them.

It's hard to know what to say - you don't say exactly what you liked/disliked about DD1. I just wrote up a review too big to fit on Steam[rpgwatch.com], so maybe something there will cover it for you.

It's worth it on a discount. It's not as good as DDDA (in MY opinion). It's shorter. It has a nice CC. Pop-in is bad in cities. Some of the lore got thrown out the window - suddenly cities are all mixed and have furries- No explanation given. Monster fights and pawns are still quite decent.
Grab on with discount, simply because they removed double jump from Strider's vocation. Also, make sure you have at least 10 cores 16 threads CPU.
It's pretty similar to the first game. But some stuff has been improved while some things are worse. Combat in general feels great in this game and I loved exploring and taking on giant monsters. Some quest and just general rules of the game don't make sense. And customizations is a little worse. Also they took one job from the first game and made it two. But I'm fine with that one.
Be aware, DD2 is NOT DDDA-Part 2. There is no BBI or EF equivalent.

Generally, players that had > 200-300 game hours in DDDA and really enjoyed the post-game grind do NOT enjoy DD2. You might even say they're the biggest non-fans and most critical of DD2 (as judged from these discussion boards).

I played both - I enjoy DD2 far more than DDDA: better combat feel, much better pawn interaction, modern graphics if you have the hardware.

Game starts out a bit tough, but almost too soon you become a god. Mods can really improve many aspects, but game should initially be played as vanilla as mods will often break the early game where you're a weakling amongst packs of mooks and larger, deadly monsters.

Well worth the sale price.

Thanks, I had a read of your review.

What I liked about DD1 was the combat and exploration. I didn't pay too much attention to the story but being able to jump on huge monsters and fight them was a lot of fun. I haven't really come across another game with the rpg element, open world and that type of combat.

I also liked that DA had a bigger end game than the original but I'm guessing DD2 doesn't have anything similar right now? My other concern with DD2 is bugs, the dragon rot/disease pawns can get that seems to ruin the game (not sure if this was fixed in a patch) and performance issues. I've recently upgraded my PC so I'm assuming most performance stuff would be mitigated though.

From the sounds of it I'd probably enjoy DD2. A lack of endgame stuff is a bit of a shame but maybe with mods on a second playthrough as you said would make it more interesting.

Sounds like you will enjoy DD2.

With good system graphics are gorgeous - still some areas with probable corrupted files that flutter and pop-in is a very real issue in towns.

The "dragon rot" you refer to, or Dragonsplague as it's called in the game, was never a big issue. It's a great example of video game mass hysteria. Early after release the dragonsplague could cause infection that was hard to detect, but it was super-nerfed and is basically a non-issue. You have to actively try to get it to end stage in your Main pawn, and even then, 2 out of 3 times it resolves on it's own even in the final stages.

I hope you enjoy the game as much, or even half as much, as I have. Feel free to 'Friend Request' me if you'd like a high level pawn you can hire for free to help you get started when you're a fledgling in the land of giants.

EDIT:
If you pull the trigger, read over this for an optimal start:

Thanks for that, I ended up grabbing it online for a cheaper price than steam. Thanks for the high level pawn offer but will start with matching level ones not to steamroll through things.

Smart. Very smart.
It is broke, and if you are a former tester like me...it annoys the crap out of you. But it is a fun game. Mostly the same as DDDA, different story.
