Not really a dedicated online multiplayer game you aren't going to get any cease and desist letter or get banned from any gaming publisher for using mods

when people talk about getting banned in this game, they're talking about their pawn getting banned, which means you can still play as normal but your pawn wont show up for hire by real players.

There are mods that can ban your pawn but most are safe. some authors will also let you know but when in doubt, anything client side is okay but if it can be uploaded to the server (like altered stats) it will get your pawn banned.
