Pawn dragon blight disease
How do I get/avoid this?
Is this something that happens in the story?

You get it from other pawns you hire in the Rift, it spreads to your main pawn like a normal plague. I have seen claims that Drake/Dragon possession gives a chance to catch the blight, but I fight drakes pretty often and am yet to catch it that way.

The first time you get it, you will have a tutorial window explaining things, so the first time is a freebie. After that you just gotta pay attention to odd behaviours.

Pretty much if you notice a pawn or your pawn being overly aggressive, dismissive of your orders or the real final symptom RED GLOWING EYES please proceed to toss them off the nearest cliff into water!

It's very easy to avoid and not something you need to worry about 95% of the time. The symptoms are pretty clear - your pawn will start spitting on the ground, making odd comments about feeling infused with power, and have a red tint (later red glow) to their eyes. if you're worried about one, take them somewhere dark (cave or the sewers in Vernworth) and look at them there - it's really obvious. If they do get it, obv just dismiss hired pawns; if it's yours you can simply camp in the wilderness a few days and it will disappear. You'll know when they announce they feel much better now.

The one area to watch is if you're resting multiple times in a row in town - usually either because you're forging stuff, or waiting to respawn monsters. It's easy to keep clicking rest and I guess it you could find yourself with late stage DP without realising. I usually just dismiss hired pawns if I'm doing that, and check my own pawn every coupel of rests to be sure.

Finally, once you have the eternal wakestone (you can forge multiple copies), DPs stops being a threat - you can immediately just rezz everyone and repair any damage you inadvertently did. The funny thing is that, despite all the worrying about DP, lots of players (once they get the eternal wakestone) try to cause it to see what happens - and find it keeps curing itself. IE not that big a deal.

So when you're in combat with a Drake or Lesser Dragon in the base game the only way you'll contract the disease from them is if they grapple your pawn and literally blow an oozing black smoke-like magic into your pawn's mouth from their mouth. If you see them attempt this grapple, you can either silence them which will stop this immediately, or begin attacking them where they are vulnerable most, their heart.

As for receiving Dragonsplague from other pawns, that's usually BECAUSE those other pawns are more than likely stuck in the post-game zone, unmoored world, which ALL Pawns that go there in their player's base game, all become afflicted with it, but when those pawns offer their services in the Rift for other players, the affliction remains. Contagiously spreading to other players pawns, that contract them. But this will be the primary way your pawn will become afflicted with it.

Don't worry about it.

It can be cured by camping a few days in the wilderness but in the unmoored everyone gets it and you can't cure it. Don't go yeeting your pawn off a cliff like I did. Esp as the hot springs may not be available. NB though even though pawns automatically have DP in the unmoored, it never progresses to full on world ending DPness. You don't really need to worry about it at all then. Also note that youre pawn will be auto cured once you go to NG+

Like puppo said, just look for a pawn in the rift with it. They become much more common the higher you go, the more players are in unmoored. If you're swapping pawns regularly, youll get it every now and again. Then hang out and wait for it to transfer to yours. I think it transfer when you camp but can take several days to show up.
