this is just if you wanna get it cheaper so as to counter all the negativity surrounding the game! that's what i did when i bought it, because i was so afraid that it might be a bad game! so to dispel that and actually have the "courage" to get it, i got it on discount on the steam sale! now there's no sale but there's that reseller you can check out!
i've played 100 hrs as of now and i almost feel bad i got it 50% off tbh! it's a great game!
but if you haven't played the first one, idk what to tell you! better not jump into this one head first, cuz it's kinda niche!
many of the bad reviews are denuvo issues, fps issues, expectations issues, some people who rage quit cuz of dragonplague or diehard fans of the original who nitpick! none of it is indicative of the actual game being good or bad except from the performance stuff (cuz it doesn;t matter that the game is good if you can't play it)! but the performance was an issue in the beginning, right now it runs smooth, but don;t expect 60 fps 4k raytracing! lower the settings, it still looks amazing at lower settings, it really isn't noticeable since most of the time you just flail your sword around like a madman trying to hit anything, get thrown off cliffs, etc etc... it's f*kn chaos!
i encountered no problems except one bugged quest that wasn't a problem, since i could still progress it and it wasn't that important of a quest anyway! and sometimes the cape on my pawn looks weird cuz of the physics, it's kinda crumpled between his back and his greatsword! then i had this thing where my armor and my pawn's armor, at some point, like 2-3 hrs ago, started having a silver "poison" on them and it wouldn't go away, but it doesn't have any effect at all, and kinda looks sick cuz we're glistening in silvery shades all the time! and in some very specific areas i notices kind of a "flickering" of light and dark, but it's subtle and lasted very little time! other than that i had zero crashes, zero lag!
I do live in Europe, but not in a EU country if that matters.
How important would it be for me to play the first one before I play this one?
Denuvo never bothered me, nor did I ever notice any performance issues in games that had it.
Raytracing to me is still a gimmick in games, not something I care about for the time being.
Sounds to me you got into, the way I would if I started now.
Of the complaints saying the open world is bland, how accurate is that?
the open world thing is an interesting topic because it ties into the story and quests. Here's the thing:
- the story is great, simple, straightforward, story
- the quests are awesome, very well written, plenty of exposition for my taste at least, and very well voice acted, and they send you in every place on the map!
NOW! the problem is this: people don't have quest markers on them like in mmos, so you don't know if someone has a quest for you! But, the game does something really cool, cuz you don't have to look for quests, they look for you! when you approach an area/town, relevant npcs approach you of their own volition! and no part of the map, so far, is left unexplored by the quests! what i mean is the quests send you all over the map, you don;t need to worry about exploring every area off the bat (except for caves, you can explore caves when you encounter them if you want), it all comes in due time! otherwise you go into places of your own volition, and then couple hours later you get a quest for that area and guess what, surprise surprise, you find it super boring now cuz you already been there!
so there's that! then there's this problem with pawns having quest knowledge and they can get you to your quest and you just gotta follow them! this is super boring as well, so you shouldn't let them guide you instead you should press the "to me" button and they follow you and you take whatever route seems interesting to you and you feel like taking it!
then there's this other thing, and this i think is a problem! the game throws multiple quests at you and you gotta keep track of them all in your head (more or less) and then it switches quest titles (but it remains essentialy the same line of quests, idk if that makes sense) so you might end up with "wtf is this quest? who tf is this guy i'm supposed to talk to? how is this important?"! and this happens because the game doesn;t do a good job of logging all of the important information of quests and doesn't necessarily keep track of the overarching questlines! But they make perfect sense! it's just that you go on tangents all the time and you forget about the initial dialogues that the npcs gave you when you got the quest, so you just forget! it happened to me, i was supposed to give a letter to ernesto or something and it has been months (in-game) until i got around to completing this quest (cuz of tangents and fights and whatnot) and i was like "who tf is ernesto! and so because of that nothing SEEMS to make any sense. even if you pay attention it comes some point where you get overwhelmed and forget stuff, and things get confusing! also i don;t think the game really tells you which quests are main story and which are sideline, they don;t have a color diferentiation (idk i might be wrong).
and then there's the world which is full of the same enemies (with different skins and power levels and whatnot)! it's true! but i never found an issue with it honestly! the first one was exactly the same! idk what to tell you about this i didn't find it a problem in the slightest! the game is about the organic encounters! i personally never had a dull moment tbh! so this comes down to prefference i guess!
so the story can seem confusing because you forget the quest information, then the world can seem to not make sense cuz you venture into it on your own without a quest so you don;t undrstand what's going on! then you feel like it's all fetch quests cuz you just prompt the pawns to do the work for you so game becomes super boring! and so you can see how all of this might translate to "bland"!
also, it's about your own curiosity too. you see a path "omg where does it lead"? i know it's super childish, but from what i felt playing it, this is the mindset that the game is designed around! it's the only way to play this game if you wanna enjoy it! if you don;t care about anything and are not interested in exploring anything, then i can see how it seems super boring! and on that path you take crazy sh*t happens more often than not, but you'll never experience it if you think "what's the point, it's the same enemies"!
oh and also, the game is a bit too easy! it's easier than the first one! the first one was hardcore! this is more of a chill adventure with so many cool moments!
it's important to play the first one to see if you like this type of game, it's a frustrating game at times, idk how to say it! story wise it also ties into this one, but i don't think it is that relevant! if you want you could just watch some story videos on the first game and you're good playing this one!
…why?
It's all good. I just left that disclaimer there, because haters who don't own the game usually flock to people trying to find honest feedback..
I've played a ton of open world games and they really take up a lot of your time, so perhaps this won't even be an issue for me.
That is neat with the way quests are given and the lack of markers. Honestly, I have mixed feelings when a game holds your hand throughout the entire thing. The pawns sound funny though, but if I end up playing, I'll probably do the same, just force them to follow me instead.
So I might check out the first one and then come around to Dogma II afterwards. I like the theme and from what you've told me, I get the sense that we're alike in this regard. I would also go exploring random paths and wondering what is this way or that way. I really appreciate your time with all of this. You've earned yourself a reward. Have an absolutely amazing day, week, year, life.
I don't use Reddit, but kcnue did a good job. I will play Dogma I first and then get around to playing Dogma II, by then we might even have Christmas Sale on Steam anyways. :D
@kcnue You're welcome!
I didn't either, always stuck to steam. But this forum pretty much single handed changed my mind :)
Anyway, good to hear kcnue's covered it. And if you've not played DDDA, def do. It's a great game too, and I think you'll get more out of DD2 having played OG first.
Thank you for the suggestion!
Interesting take and I am familiar with this approach. I'll dig around a bit more and come to a conclusion. Thanks to you too!
