So, yeah, you wasted a wakestone.
This BUT:
Wakestone are not that rare. I wouldn't bother about dead NPCs in the field, however. Such things happen.
With the last patch, you will get a tip of the oracle, if you need to revive an NPC for a quest. (There could be quite some cases in that regard. The Quest for Trysh (Sorcerer/mage-master) is such a quest. Also the elf in Vernworth can die. I definitly would safe the wakestones for such situations. It doesn't hurt, however, to alsways have at least one with you for yourself. (especially in the unmoored world...)
