I don't know how ratings are treated elsewhere, but in my country they're mostly irrelevant.

Video game and movie ratings are useless no matter what, because some little 5 year kid will always seem to play a m rated game or an r rated movie.

Games get M rating for 'implications' of any of the restricted themes. e.g. there is a lot of racism behind the lines. It has a brothel that shoves beastren in the back rooms.

...and it would be a terrible game if there wasn't -the world actually feels alive because it has people with contradicting prejudice and struggle. You get to explore and see everyone's sides.

oops one graduated with honors, and in college now, on a free ride, and on presidents list and corrects my grammar and spelling constantly ugh. the other is graduating high school with honors and has taken a full semester of college already, and is going to college on a free ride. They also play 6 instruments. never shielded them from anything. explained why things where bad or good. encouraged them to ask questions, like why. encouraged them to take ♥♥♥♥ a part to see how it works. we broke a lot of ♥♥♥♥, we explored the why's and we tried new things. and they where always to busy to get into the stupid ♥♥♥♥. ive been married for 27 years to an incredible women who instead of giving up in hard times we pushed through. so id say i did a good job parenting...excuse me we, me and my wife.., but hey judge away i also taught them not to judge people right away try to figure them out first.

DD1 also had a mature rating, and warned of partial nudity. There was never any such thing in DD1; the clothing on either sex was always loos fitting and showed no skin. Now it's carried over to DD2. Well, the attire in DD2 is now like what you would see at the beach, or some modern music shows, but that's as far as it goes.

This. "M" is a very wide range, from stuff like this or Mass Effect, up through gore & violence fests like Mortal Kombat or Dead Island 2. If you expect an M rating to automatically be more like the latter, you'll likely be disappointed a lot of the time.

(kind of like movies with R ratings. Could be just a few strong curse words and one scene of someone doing some coke, could be wall-to-wall blood & nudity.)

Also they are wearing underwears all the time except in a hot spring. And they are covered with vapor when they are naked. So, they are always covered.

Because there are implied scenes of intimacy. Usual US bias towards nudity being the worst thing even while depictions of murder are perfectly fine for young teens.

Most games with suggestive clothing will get a mature rating. As someone else said, it's to stop lawsuits. Also, though unlikely, something in DLC may be mature.
It's pretty much a sign of the times in the USA anyhow. Anyone will sue anyone for almost any reason.
There's more than enough woke folk to pull their hair out if an attractive female wears a bikini.
No nudity in Stellar Blade and look at the hell that game is getting. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Nier Automata didn't get much grief did it?

boomers yes gen x not so much. Boomers are still running stuff, and you see where that's gotten us. No worries they are getting ready to all retire soon. gen x is a generation of don't give a ♥♥♥♥. im not sure what has made you think gen x would care about this sort of thing we grew up playing games like Leisure Suit Larry lol gen x will soon have an opportunity to fix all this garbage. reality though is gen wont give a ♥♥♥♥ to do anything and leave it up to the millennial's good luck
