I think I broke the Phantom Oxcart Quest -- Help please!
So here's what happened:

I did all the stuff to get the quest setup, and went to go sneak on the cart.

I told my pawns to wait, walked up naked, and snuck on -- got the achievement.

We got to the first goblin fight, fought them with my fists, but out of nowhere a hired pawn teleported like 10000 miles and started to help me [even though they where on hold] -- and the guy went "you're no pawn" and drove away -- leaving me and all the other pawns just stranded there.

The quest did not fail in my log.

Now whenever I walk up to the phantom oxcart in vernworth at night, there are no pawns in the back.

It drives slowly, if I get close to it the driver starts driving away fast -- and if I run out of stamina he disappears completely.

Am I completely beaned?

If I ask a pawn to lead the way, they just go to the checkpoint town and go "I can't lead you further"

So my previous testing, somehow I bugged it out where the oxcart driver didn't exist (couldn't find in the morgue) so he never left to go to those other locations.

Reloading my save, I did the same thing, snuck into the oxcart, got out to fight the goblins, then called my pawns and he realized I was not a pawn.

I then went back to the oxcart meeting place and the driver was there this time. As I approached (still naked no gear/rings/lantern) he automatically rolled away, I followed, but not too close. Upon reaching the goblins checkpoint, it gives you a "meanwhile at the border checkpoint" cutscene and continues the quest as normal. Instead of you getting beat up, you watch the pawns from a distance (I did not try to run up and stop anything). and then it continues the story onto backbattahl immediately after that (no more running) takes you to the locked door and you are behind the oxcart as if you road it like normal and the fight continues.

(update)
ok after the fight, I'm bugged and can't open inventory or escape menu or interact with anything. Will try to restart game or something. Tried jumping into ocean to brine myself but it didn't even kill me, just ran around all glitchy.

(update 2)
Alt f4'ed game, came back. Had to chase oxcart again but the final fight at door didn't bug me out and was able to complete quest as normal.

May be screwed, I'm on NG+ at end with that quest and while I was going to ignore it, I'm inn saved right before the quest. I can try to bug myself out a few times to try to replicate what you have and reset to inn save to try a few things and see if it's fixable.

I bugged the quest out like last week, but I didn't know I bugged it out -- thought I just failed it and could "try again later"

I only realized its ♥♥♥♥♥♥ earlier today when I tried to do it again lol

But yea trying to replicate the bug would be interesting, and maybe we can report it to capcom somehow.

I don't mind failing a quest, but since the quest is still in my log it gives me a false feeling of hope lol

I give up on this stupid quest. I started it and it was nothing like what I read it would be. I ended up in a cutscene with an NPC surrendering to me without even chasing him. I went back to Brant and can't even remember what he told me to do at this point. I just tried to start the quest again and went to the highlighted area on the map just after dusk. I saw the phantom oxcart. I hid behind the house nearby. I tried to follow it but it just disappeared. I wasn't far away from it at all.

My question, is this quest at all important to the endgame? If not I am ignoring it. I am just trying to wrap up quests before going to the unmoored world.

no idea if its important to the end game, I didnt beat the game yet -- but it has an achievement attached to it

also you might've not broke the quest yet if you did nto interact with carraige

take all your gear off (including rings), dismiss your pawns (throw the main pawn in the brine) and walk up to the phantom oxcart slowly at night talking to the driver

he should tell you to get in

You can ignore it if you want. Doesn’t do anything in endgame.

Yeah, I just looked up the rewards for completing this quest and like most of the others, not worth it.

When it's driving away have you tried just slowly jogging behind it, out of earshot of what the driver is saying but close enough you can still see it? That's what you're supposed to do if you don't want to pretend to be a pawn. After about 90 seconds of following like that it should advance the quest.

I replicated the pawn screwing up quest and now the cart avoids me. Trying to wait at checkpoint town or bakbattahl to see if I can trigger the next steps. Last I'll try to jog behind it as mentioned.

Currently just standing around naked in kitty town by the locked gate.

Just rest at a camp sight to not create an inn save between each try as it looks like it can bug out and npcs can disappear or your ui gets locked.

So camp out by river till night time then follow behind (don't sprint up to it, just. Jog and maybe sprint to keep it in audible range where you can see subtitles of guy talking)

copy.

I'll do an innrest at vernworth; just incase something gets glitched too hard -- and then I'll do regular camps at the fire nearby

This quest is a foreshadowing of the entire last act of the game. It’s buggy and nonsensical and leads to nothing.

Personally, I didn't have any bugs in my quests on my original play through. Now I'm "TRYING" to break quests and see different results, and now it's getting buggy.

So tells me the intended way of playing works, but gamers are unpredictable and they might not be doing the game the way it was intended or missing information. Most of these broken quests are due to lack of player understanding, but I did in fact get bugged twice trying to trouble shoot this, so I won't say there are not actual bugged scripts.

You technically failed, but its not a fail condition for the quest, just sneaking on board. So long as you dont get too close, you can follow him for a bit where he will talk out loud for a bit and you will get a cutscene; DO NOT DO ANYTHING. Waiting should be more than enough. Then it should finish as normal.
