If you have already done that you can pick a vocation that seems interesting, hire some pawns and head out and explore as well. After a while you can unlock more skills and upgrade some equipment you can buy at merchants. You can also try to follow the early quests. You can just do one or two of Brant's quests then explore quests outside the city.
This is your time to free roam. You "could" go to the next zone/town by sneaking around various ways to get to the desert/beastren area, but the game tries to discourage you as most average players are not ready in the first play through.
After you are comfortable in Vermund with the humans, the next logical place guides you to the elf area in the Malachite forest, as one of the side quests in Vernworth takes you there.
In the elf area, there are very few quests, but you can explore/loot/level in that area, before finally progressing story and they introduce you to the southern area of Battahl and city of Bakbattahl.
Lastly you continue south to the volcanic island of Agamen.
None of the above "has" to be done that way, but it feels close to the developers concept of how the story progresses. I tried to keep spoilers out of it as much as possible and introduce locations is all.
So in essence you start out at the northern section of them map. Head south. then head west, then head south/south east.
a lot of side things is very missable in this game
Then just move to it and check what you find on the way to it, alway try to reach ! symbol on the map you will need those later.
You might as well explore some arount the starting area. You will get somewhat familiar with how things work, you will get some experience and pick up a few missions, maybe levelup some. You might not be coming back often to that area.
I once was like you young Padawan.
The devs made it like this so you explore everything. Try each vocation, you'll get starting gear for each when you change.
I have 90hrs into the game and I haven't touched the main quest.
Exploration for me is just so much fun. More of the landscape is accessible than you may think. You may need levitation to reach some places, but the going places is always worth it.
If you want something more linear, there's youtube videos on quests.
Lastly, watch your hired pawns. They will mostly use the correct attacks. Watch how they fight monsters. It'll give you an idea on how to play a class/vocation.
