I thought that at first too, but the pawns will usually say something about needing a bow if you have the quest tracked, but they never mentioned anything while I was a Magick Archer so just went for it and it worked fine. The game doesn't have a lot of flags/triggers you'd think it should for stuff like this.
I didn't use any skills. I just held the normal right trigger (Rivet shot option) and fired at it. Luckily the middle arrow hit the target and it continued the quest like normal.
Conversion changes the skill between Pinpoint Volley and Rivet shot which changes the size of the shot arrow and the speed with which the targets are locked on.
When I first started MA was confused about it, but some people gave me some good advice on this thread: https://steamcommunity.com/app/2054970/discussions/0/4352240180484522350/
It's the class ability, so for mouse and keyboard that would be right click to aim, like in 99% of games, I suspect it is as generic on controller.
You are also told this when you unlock the classes.
