help find the sphinx
at the beginning of the game how many missions do you need to do to be able to go around the map wherever you want and go exploring. I want to find the sphinx.

someone told me this: if I don't do Ser Gregory's mission to Vernsworth, there's a giant gate portcullis blocking off the rest of the map. So is it mandatory to do it or not?

I mean, some rewards are pretty good, like the casting speed ring, or the unmaking arrow.
casting speed ring can be gotten elsewhere. so can unmaking arrow.
Doesnt change the fact that they're good rewards.

not for effort trying to blindly find it and do all those back and forth so called "riddles".

Well idk about you but a ring with 50% increase on casting speed and a literal one shot arrow seem like good rewards for what she asks you to do.

its a one time use item for the arrow and like i said you can get the ring elsewhere for far less effort.

Could someone help me get to the sphinx, taking an easy route. however, almost the entire map will be darkened.

finally, is Gregory's mission obligatory or not? and it's easy to do

again it is until the point of the gate.

I understand that it's the point of the gate, like you said. but if I don't want to do it, you can still reach the sphinx. does it have to be done?
the problem is that then I will have almost the entire map darkened. you don't have an image with the route marked on the map to reach the sphinx

the gate will stay locked until the guard gets it open, there is a cave near by you can't even get through because it would skip it. so yes again, you must get the gate open.

You "need" to get to vernworth first anyway so just do the main quest leading there. The only shortcut west out of melve that avoids vernworth requires you to do some elf quests.

The first step is to get over the large river west of vernworth (halfway across the map). It's easier and you can avoid most combat if you have levitate (mage/sorceror) learned. You can just follow the main (larger) path out of town.

Once you crossed the big river in the center of the map....

With levitate, you can climb rocks northwest after that river to get into the griffins nest at the bottom center of the misty marshes. Then go northwest out of the nest and follow the border of the misty marshes. A few paths will lead west out of the marshes but you can easily levitate + climb north around there to get to the camp area and stairs leading to the sphinx.

Without levitate, you'll probably want to take an oxcart west out of vernworth to checkpoint town, then follow the main road north out of town. Take any of the 2 roads off of the main route that lead directly north and head into the ancient battleground, then climb to the top of the battleground to enter the caves in the back. A few cave paths back there lead, eventually, straight east to the sphinx.
