How to make the pawn use its skills?

I approached a high ledge, my pawn offered to throw me there using its skill (ally toss with shield), I press all the command buttons, but nothing happens.
I must be doing something wrong, and where should I press to command the pawn to prepare the skill?

I used to stand before the ledge I want the pawn to boost me and press "help".
Not sure if it work everywhere tho, haven't use it much.

Tried, probably doesn't work everywhere or all the time, because my pawn keeps standing there and just staring at me.

Pretty sure there is a sweet spot to stand to trigger it. I found it very stupid that I just decided to go to those spots myself. Thief or Mage/Sorc all the way.

I've had better luck getting mages to levitate themselves to grab a chest than the launches (shield or great sword).

It might be easier to launch a pawn (or throw them) than it would be to get it to work as intended.
