How TF do you chop medusa's head off?

So I found Medusa(the first boss you encounter during tutorial) in a remote dungeon and I thought killing her would give me her head. It didn't. Went back to an older save(had to go to the inn because as you can guess it autosaves after you kill her) and came back and tried it again. I climed on top of her and hit her head repeatedly with daggers(was playing as thief).
I tried two different daggers(heavens key and the ice one) and none of them worked.
I got the bow though, it's pretty OP.

But how do you even get her to give you head?(no pun intended)

The point ain't a dagger, it's because of the vocation he is using, slash is needed, lightning seems to maybe help. But that could be just confirmation bias in terms they never tested the difference without lightning.

Whatever you do make sure you drop a port crystal, port to a town, rest at an inn and port back because if you fail this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game gives you no other way to try it again since it's gonna save your game like a ♥♥♥♥ after the fight and if you load your last inn rest because you though resting at your house or camping counted, it doesn't. Oh yeah and when you load your inn rest it ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ deletes the ♥♥♥♥ autosave after the fight was over. Also any pawns that stood there like they're dumb and got gazed will be gone.

The thing is, you can't kill it fast to do it. It has to be done before losing 1 health bar.
Anyway you can do it every 14 days.

Then I must've gotten really lucky. Or maybe it's because I was just observing it for a while and hiding behind a rock because of the scary, red beams coming out of the head, my pawn must've climbed it in the meantime and done the deed.

Does lightning debuff do anything to help it along? Or it's just how many hits and dmg before 1 health bar is gone.

I tired it with lightning buff and I was not able to do it. I've seen videos of people doing it in one to two hits and I have never been able to replicate that outcome. The above method I posted is the only 100% surefire way to be Guaranteed a Preserved Medusa Head that I know of personally.

it appears to be super inconsistent. tried it for half an hour with ring, without ring, with fire dmg and cold dmg. After I switched to lightning the head came off in like 5 seconds.

I guess it's different for everyone based on how you play I did it three times in a row with zero issues. I'm glad you got it to work though with lightning damage I may revisit this in the future. I still have to defeat the medusa 5 more times for the badge.

i reset for 20 mins using holy daggers with nothing and then switched to duospear and lighting affinity and instantly got it.

whatever the case and however random it may be i firmly believe lightning + slash is the key.

The Ring of Derision trick worked like a charm. Forget about buffs and what daggers the ring is much easier. With whole party on wait.

Ring itself is a reward from a Sphinx riddle in the second shrine.

I just did this new method two times in a row it seems that by using the sleep arrow spell Sedative Bolt or Soporific Bolt that as soon as the medusa falls asleep I was able to cut the head off cleanly in three or less hits each time.

Yeah I don't even have warfarer vocation unlocked. I'll try with the lightning daggers and damage reduction ring.
How long does it take for dusa to respawn?

Warfarer with sleep arrow + fighter long sword is the best way to get the fresh head, 0 Medusa HP lost, most fresh head ever. It only takes you 10 secs. Once she sleeps, you will one hit her (need to hit her neck or head) with the long sword.

apparently the best way is to use thief with lightning daggers, climb medusa, latch onto the head, then spam attacks until the head pops off. And she apparently has a 7 day respawn timer

Yeah I got it down with warfarer. Used sleep arrows and then switched to lightning daggers and chopped the heat off.
But it didn't work the first time, no idea why. I quit and loaded back in, tried again and 2nd time I opened up with the heavy attack on the head while it was down and then I started doing normal hits and it worked.
Seems like a bit of RNG.
I also had the damage reduction ring on. Otherwise you can burn through the first health bar pretty quick once she is down.

The problem is that Cutting off Parts isn't affected by the Damage you deal, it's a number of hits. So the best thing you can do, is switch to Thief and grab your lowest damage daggers or if you have access to it, the Ring of Derision just equip that.
