How do you decapitate golems?

I've seen it happen online and somehow managed it once myself, but I have no idea how.
The golem's head shooting exploding lasers when it goes berserk is annoying to deal with so I'd really like to know if there's a reliable way to consistently decapitate it.

i think it loses it's head when it falls down, so you just run over there and grab it. You can also aim for him

If you are careful about not destroying the brightly glowing medal you can avoid it going berserk that way also.

But you need to destroy the medals to kill the golem. Sorry, but how is this advice useful?
Do I have to not destroy them too fast or do the medals only glow for a short duration?
