Accepting his quest with the clothes on moves you directly into a cutscene. There's no need to lock your fashion because you won't have access to your menus til after its no longer needed. So I feel some other factor is at work there.
Try visiting a vocation hall and changing your job. That should unequip everything in favor of the best gear in your inventory for that job.
Cutlass Jack, thank you for this great suggestion. I swapped vocations back and forth and that finally auto-unequipped the courtly gear.
