During the fight/flight the whole time i was thinking "even if i win this i think i'm still gonna die"
Drake with both wings damaged flying away

With griffons though, that ♥♥♥♥'s annoying. If you get them burning they cannot fly away, so maybe give that a shot. They also have a nest they'll fight to the death in, but those are more tedious to get to IMHO.
The damage you do carries over though (at least to a degree). Early on I fought a random griffon and got him down to one bar before he fled. Later while walking to some objective, it swooped down to attack. It only had one bar left from the earlier fight, so I could finish it.
It has nothing to do with weight, it has to do with them not saying " eh I'm losing bye "
I've tested this extensively at this point and as far as I've been able to tell ( Over 24 drake kills ) they will not fly away if you or a pawn is actively climbing on them. However, don't get complacent, hit the head like a madman if you're up there. Don't just stand on it waiting for the inevitable levin or bolide cast.
