DISCONTINUED QUESTS
Hey guys, I've never played DD1 so I've been going in to DD2 raw and having fun so far. However last night, I took on one quest that apparently just discontinued 5 other quests. Since the game isn't structured for you to save scum how do i prioritize quests? I mean I value exploring the world first and handling quests by proximity, but do I really have to follow a guide book? I'm cool with how hard/different the game has been but the questing system threw me off a bit.

Yeah much like the first game, when you do certain main quest milestones some side-quests may be discarded. Also there are some quests that are timed. If there's an urgent matter as saving someone, prioritize those.

I too succumbed to such a downfall. There's a point where Captain Brant will ask you about heading to the castle and you have the choice to accept or decline and come back when you're ready, apparently this point will start pushing the story forward and some stuff with discontinue. I hate how you can't attempt to recontinue cause this just makes playing the game all the worse cause you can be quite a bit into a quest in say Harve, do a small story quest in Vernworth and now it's gone. However I finished the game, in NG+ now and I plan on doing everything I can side quest wise before actually proceeding with the story stuff as much as I did the first time

Edit: Coronation quest is what I mean by the choice from Brant

1) identify if this is a main quest or a side quest.

2) if main quest, you risk losing quests. But you can go deeper by reading the quest and asking "will this make a big difference in the story?" If the answer is "yes" there is like, a 99% chance it will end quests.

So, in my example, I was invited to the coronation in the main story. There is no way in hell that this is going to go well. Feels like a major plot milestone, so I put that on hold and did side quests.

Also, having a good feel for the flow of the story helps. All these quests leading up to the overthrow of the false arisen are obviously leading up to something. So that too is another reason to suspect that a big plot event is coming when you finish the last one.

I'm guessing you started the coronation questline? Yeah, unlike the quests that let you know they're time-sensitive (via the hourglass symbol on the quest page), the game doesn't tell you that a bunch of sidequests get canceled once you progress far enough in the main quest.

I'm fairly certain this is the only time DD2 does this, besides when you make the jump to the "endgame." None of the discontinued quests are mission-critical, and even if you missed certain special rewards (like with the "Readvent of Calamity" quest), you should still be able to earn it anyway by traveling to the right place, though I don't want to say more than that and spoil anything.

So, you shouldn't worry too much about missing anything important, just proceed at your own pace and enjoy the experience. Missing or failing quests because you weren't sure what to do or where to go is very much intentional to this game's vibe -- the world exists independently of you and sometimes you'll miss stuff because you can't be everywhere all at once.

You guys are all right and yes it was a main quest but the little warning that was given, I thought it was more of a make sure you camp and have full HP, stocked up on curatives, and a solid party structure, I didn't think it was just going to throw away other quests. :(

Thanks guys!

The first game you did it in multiple playthroughs. Like you would likely be unable to clear a certain quest early on because it took you past several high level enemies. So instead, the easiest solutions was to just do it on NG+ instead, and get 100% completion then.
Don't worry you didn't miss much. You most likely just missed the 5 "stealth" missions where you sneak around the Vernworth Palace for no reason. And even then none of those quests storylines see any actual resolution or ending. Literally none of it matters by the end of the game.
