Windows screensaver stops starting after closing Dragon's Dogma 2
For some reason, after launching Dragon's Dogma 2, turning on the Windows screensaver on my monitor always stops working.
This is the only problem with this game.
The game closes, Steam synchronizes saves with the cloud, everything is ok. But the screensaver does not turn on.
It feels like something in the game keeps stopping the computer from activating the screen saver.
I tried running powercfg -requests but nothing was found holding the display.
This is an important issue for me because I have an OLED display.
How to solve this problem?
Currently, the only thing that helps me is logging out of the Windows user or restarting the computer.

I heard that games and other programs can turn off screensaver, but might forget to turn it back on again. Was apparently an issue with Witcher 3 as well.
You can try following this: https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/206907-screen-saver-toggle-off-add-desktop-context-menu.html
But idk if works on windows 10 or 11.

Personally, I don't use screen savers and just turn off the display if I'm gone for a while.

Thx for answer!
But I could not download files from this forum, because this requires registration on the forum, and it is disabled: >Sorry, registration is currently closed.

By the way, perhaps I didn’t express myself entirely clearly - I didn’t mean that the Windows screensaver is turned off programmatically - it remains on. It just stops being activated - this happens if Windows thinks that the user is working at the computer (pressing buttons, moving the mouse). In this case, the screensaver does not turn on - and this is exactly what happens after exiting the game.

Unfortunately, I don't want to set the display to turn off automatically because the Samsung G8 Oled has problems with the display waking up from sleep mode when connected via DP. So I use a screensaver that draws a regular black screen after 5 minutes of inactivity.

Hey OP, did you ever figure this out? I also narrowed it down to DD2 preventing my PC to turn on the screensaver. It's fine after a restart though. It's annoying since I have an OLED and trying to prevent burn-in. The only other thing I can do is just restart my PC after I'm done playing.

Open task manager after closing game, and see if it's still the game is still running under the Details tab, even after closing the game. My Old PC had this issue where the game isn't technically closed, so screen saver won't start.

Yes. But you can simple disconnect the win user and logon again.. restart it is not needed. But in all ways it is bad.

I checked - there are no traces of dd2 in the task manager. Something else is preventing the screen saver from turning on.
But the problem is that the screensaver does not turn on after closing the game; in any case, this game or Nvidia drivers. It's difficult for me to judge what exactly.

I even ran a command line powercfg /energy and I didn't notice anything right away from the game that prevents it from activating. It's just weird that it happens. I'll look into it more.

I don't think it's the Nvidia drivers. I'm running an all AMD system and the same thing happens. Screensaver won't turn back on after closing the game unless I force it to run in the Windows settings with the preview button, and it also seems to stop Desktop Slideshow from working too.

just adding myself here to follow. i have this exact problem. i thought it was my new xbox controller, but its not. its def. dd2 as it only happens when i play this game...and it happens every time i play the game. its 100% repeatable.

same as everyone else. after running the game my screen saver is disabled. the only way to get it going again is a full computer restart or through settings and manually turning it back on there.

now...i do have mods on in the game...but this behavior was happening before i modded the game...since the very first time i ran it. the character creator however, did not exhibit this issue at all....for what thats worth.

Yes, it's strange.
Perhaps it is affected by Denuvo (although this is not the case in other games, but perhaps dd2 has some new denuvo) or the capcom launcher.

Or maybe the game just turns something off at the winapi level and doesn’t turn it back on. By the way, this is a priority I think.
For example, Enshrouded and Cyberpunk 2077 allow my display to turn on the screen saver if they are running in Fullscreen Borderless (and the screen saver actually turns on when I go out, for example, to smoke without closing the game - I have it set to start the screen saver after 3 minutes not activity), but DD2 does not allow it. Apparently, the developers were supposed to remove such a ban when closing the game, but they forgot to do so..

It seems to me that this is an important issue in light of the fact that more and more Oleds are on the market. In fact, you can (accidentally or due to circumstances) leave the screen with the game for several hours. And this is bad for Oled.
By the way, another problem is that AAA game developers rarely think about making it possible to set the level of transparency of menu items in the settings. And this is also important for Oled.
For example, in Darktide this option is available in the game settings.

Yeah, the only reason this matters to me is because I play on an OLED. I still can't figure out why it's only DD2 causing this. I was able to get my SS to turn on after starting the game, but I didn't load a save, I just exited as I got to the menu.

Any updates for fix this issue?
I know this is a necro, but I came across this thread while trying to figure out why Monster Hunter Wilds caused my screensaver to stop working. It has to be something either in RE Engine or Capcom's anti-cheat. Disappointing that it's been going on for so long with no fix. I guess I'll keep restarting after I play to protect my OLED.

It's been happening since the RE Engine came out.

It's not awesome but I leave the Screen Saver Settings window active on my desktop so I can turn off and then turn back on my screensaver after exiting a relevant program (MHW, RE4, etc.)

You don't need to restart your machine, you just need to cycle the screen saver setting and it'll function as normal. (Change screen saver to '(none)', hit <apply> then change it back to whatever you're using and hit <apply> again.)

Hitting <WIN> key then typing 'screee' will get you to the menu straight from the start menu.

Really would like them to fix this...
