Do I need to buy the expensive "Courtly Tunic" and "Courtly Breeches" for the main quest?
In the quest The Stolen Throne, the Captain asked me to dress formally to infiltrate the masquerade party. So does that mean I need to spend 300k gold to buy the "courtly" set from the vendor? That is a huge sum!

You can get a set from finishing a questline in town, there is a set in the noble's quarters, there is a set in the masquerade hall in the castle grounds, there is a set in the castle in the regentkin's suite, and a couple other places.

There are other ways to get them.

Despite charging so much, the vendor offers very little for it when you try to sell it.

That's how it usually goes. Stuff isn't really that expensive. They are only expensive if the person selling them makes them that way.

In RL, I tried selling some box sets of tv shows and they would offer me a dollar for it, even if I bought it for $20+

This is also nothing new when buying/selling things in any game xD
Nah you can find them things a lot of different places, I've got like 5 full sets. Try looking around in the houses in the Noble Quarter

So far I've counted that I've sold at least 5 sets that I've found and still have one just in case

play the game and you'll find out. there are several options, some even free, so...

You can just rob any high class home to find a set, just don't sell them all cause you need at least one.

I've ended up with about 5 sets of them from just opening chests around the nobles houses and castle.

There is almost nothing you can't get from quests or exploring/looting aside from high-dps end-game equipment.

The nobles in the Noble District tend to be dressed nicely. Hint hint, nudge nudge 😁

Hunting rich people for their skins. Interesting.
