You do get certain stats from levelling different vocations.
When switching vocations, there is some recalculation that takes place to make sure you are not totally gimped by switching, however you do still have the bonus stats from level ups affecting you.
Some testing was done early on and it was found that LONG TERM and I mean super high level, (200) the stats equalled out no matter what classes you levelled as. everyone effectively has the same stats at lvl 200 seemingly.
However early to mid game, the bonus stats from levelling particular vocations before the diminishing returns kick in will be more beneficial while in those stages of the game.
I'm happy with that tbh. best of both worlds really. Min maxing for late game in DD1 was a pain in the ass.
Here it's useful early game but you don't need to be as particular about it.
TL;DR
Early game focus vocations and try to dip for augments as little as possible.
at higher levels it doesn't matter and ends up the same regardless.
