Both Dogmas are however rather unusual games, putting focus on systems and parts of the gameplay not many others do while neglecting things that are the focus of many RPGs. Therefore I think it could be prudent to try the cheaper original game to make sure you're actually going to like the franchise. If you do, DD2 is straight up better in most everything.
DA is absolutely amazing though. I absolutely recommend Dark Arisen.
DD:DA has BBI which is what people are thinking of when saying DD:DA is better, DD2 improve upon the world exploration but the problem with DD:DA main campaign is still there and arguably got worse if you have the attention span of a goldfish, since you need to pay attention and do several interlinked side quest to make heads of the main campaign and unlike DD:DA, a lot of the characterization is behind side quests instead of being shoved down your throat in the main quest
DD+DA is like having two games in one. It's an amazing experience.
DD2 has way better animation data, You can really spot the old "clunkyness" if you play as a Warrior. DD2 flows much better overall with its animation transitions.
Don't worry about Story. it's neither of the their strong point. The point is always your personal willpower or ambition. Never accept what is given to you, your life is yours to live and take. et cetera.
It's like comparing a new Monster Hunter to the older Monster Hunter from a previous generation. New game is released but lacking all the content the previous one built up. The other feels too retro because of the hardware it was built to compliment.
You play and replay DD+DA because you love retro action games. You play DD2 because you prefer the updated mechanics, graphics and AI/Scripting advancements.
It is worth playing the 1st for you to know if dragon's dogma clicks with you. If money isn't a problem for you just do whatever you want.
I'll disagree with the 1st post, the 2nd game feels like a re-telling of the same story, with the same themes structured in the same way.
The 1st game is complete with an expansion and has MUCH better dungeos, this is really the thing that I didn't like about DD2.
I played a couple of hours on DDA and disliked it
Same for graphics
Graphics are better in DD2.
