except that even games like DS and ER have fast travel. being inconvenient doesn't equal hard. it was so annoying in the first one that they added an infinite teleport item later on. honestly not a fan of that. having no easy fast travel is just a waste of time and nothing else
They also mentioned how the world will have random encounters throughout. I'm willing to guess they will be scaled to your level as well. So that no matter where you are traveling you will always be challenged.
You have to ADVENTURE in an ADVENTURE game?
How DARE they!?
You could argue that it is 'more immersive' and aims to make the world feel larger and to make you feel like your journeys between one place and another were more meaningful with the trials along the way.
I say that at level 100 when I want to just get to a unique store that there's not at all challenging about that journey and its just busywork. But by then, I do in fact have port crystals and an eternal ferrystone.
When you realise the difference in experiences between a new player starting out, and an older player who has seen those places repeatedly, the progression of the fast travel system in Dragon's Dogma starts to make more sense. You want the new player to engage with the content that they presumably haven't seen before and its possible night and day variations in enemies, and by the time that gets old, you are just about to receive a port crystal that you can use to simplify things.
When IGN says fast travel is limited / rare, take that with a grain of salt, because often what seems daunting to the average gamer and reviewer is in reality a trivial thing for people who are good at the game and play it for longer than 10 hours. Chances are the system limitations are just overblown compared to how its actually going to be in the real world.
"There are items that allow you to fast travel in game"
