Opinion, suggestion on vocation and main pawn
I didn’t play the first DD starting with this on.

I started with archer and ended up making a fighter pawn taking thief and mage as the extras.

I don’t really do the souls like games why I went archer over fighter as I didn’t want to try and time blocks or dodging to survive, and climbing monsters doesn’t seem like something I would do well either.

I am thinking of changing or unlocking the spear hand for my main and wondering if I should go thief for my main pawn over the fighter.

I do like characters that have better survivablity, thought of the thief as well for main but seems they need to do a lot of climbing.

Stay ranged and unlock Magick archer in the last area. No climbing, just stay max range and melt health bars.

I like being the Fighter with sword and board, and keeping the aggro while my Archer, Mage and Sorceror fight from range.

I run archer with a mage pawn for fire enchants and heals, then some combo of fighter/thief/sorc for support, with support pawns being replaced every 4-5 levels.

I'm level 33 as of last night and this setup has been going really well.

Make your pawn a fighter and take magic archer

If you want easy mode.
Start with strider(or assasin), the one with dual wielding dagger. When you got the skill, spinning air attack, it's the start of your good time. THat move is broken in both DD1 and 2. And later, you have a invinciable skill as the master skill.
If you want to experience why this game is a cult classic, start with mage and it's advanced class. You will have two grand magic in the end. Meteor shower, and tornado. Even it's nerfed in the game, but nothing in the game industry has anything close to it.

As for pawn, mainly use fighter for survival and tank. Don't expect pawn to do good DPS.
The best pawn is mage, there is a mage staff, let the pawn revive itself.
