Having gear with knockdown protection on it, but a major factor is predicting their attacks (which are telegraphed) and not being where they are attacking. Also interrupting them before they can interrupt you is a good tactic; I'm running an archer so that's what I'm focusing on whenever I'm not Deadly striking someone's face off. Melee classes can throw rocks/explodey barrels/other mobs as a form of interruption also

there is gear specific to protect you from stagger, but the best stagger defense is to not get hit, or be a warrior, or both

Just to clarify, less to do with specific classes and more to do with augments you get from levelling them.

Look at the different augments that you get from each class. There are several that are really useful no matter what class you are. dipping into those classes specifically for the augments is a good idea.

you'll get staggered no matter what your knockdown resistance is, even as a maxed out defense fighter in the best armor possible I would get stagger-locked by trash mobs and knocked down by large monsters

even wolves were capable of flinching me despite being in heavy armor, so I think the knockdown resistance stat is actually useless

the only way to avoid it is to super armor through it as a warrior, use the shield spell from the mage vocation, or spearhand shield, you can also use the master thief skill to avoid damage entirely

ultimately the best defense is to not get hit

So to Summarize, in terms of stagger/flinching resistance, there is nothing to be done aside from being a warrior, and knockdown resistance doesn't do d**k in stopping it.
Cool, glad i looked this up before wasting my materials on dwarven smithing.
