Look at the different augments that you get from each class. There are several that are really useful no matter what class you are. dipping into those classes specifically for the augments is a good idea.
whats a decent value for knockdown resistance ? im currently at 165 (100)
even wolves were capable of flinching me despite being in heavy armor, so I think the knockdown resistance stat is actually useless
the only way to avoid it is to super armor through it as a warrior, use the shield spell from the mage vocation, or spearhand shield, you can also use the master thief skill to avoid damage entirely
ultimately the best defense is to not get hit
