I usually bring an archer and either a sorc, warrior or thief as guest pawns.
Mages are support and much more so in DD2. So a party only needs one of them.
I don't think it's a waste to have both a Mage AND a Sorc in the party. And I think Mages can even spell sync with Sorcs now? When that wasn't true for DD1
Mage pawn will give you those heals, buffs, and clear debuffs. Over all solid choice as you can slap on whatever elemental buff you want one elemental attack and then slap the status clear and you have one slot left over.
Sorcerer is going to do lots of damage just slap whatever you want on them. There is some real battle breakers in their kit.
Personally I tend to play a sorc and my main pawn is a tank. Then i hire a heal mage and whatever else is in the rift that strikes my fancy
