Sounds like you're not playing the vocation right so yeah you should switch.
"If you by accident get cornered or caught alone youre done for cause theres NOTHING you can do." - This applies to every vocation to an extent. You're just punished less or more depending on which class.
It breaks the game and makes you invincible to all damage.
Of course, I need to pay attention how the enemies stand and that my character does not get cornered but... this should be clear. Dead is always a learn lesson for me and not because I play a stupid class, I just was stupid.
Maybe mage is just not a class which is fun for you, so you are less eager to learn from your mistake. You always can choose another vocations for you and your pawn and try it out.
you can also try exploiting oil and water to do more damage.
or theyll deal massive damage to an ogre.
I use those spell books often and they do insane burst damage to bosses.
Anything else is just gravy.
You need to do a quest to get it.
If you yourself aren't feeling the mage playstyle though, consider swapping vocations to Archer and using a Mage pawn instead.
Remember that only thieves can dodge roll - make sure you're positioning yourself well and don't let yourself get surrounded. This isn't a 1 vs the world game, it's a team game. Bring a tank.
