The art direction is very bad
It's a bad take on realism, especially when you compare it to something like Red Dead Redemption 2 that did realism in a beautiful and artistic way.

Dragons Dogma 2 actually makes nature seem unintersting and very ugly compared to real life.

It looks like this because they are using quixel megascans, which is literally 3d scans of the real world environment. It looks realistic, but also bland as hell, there's zero artistic input involved, you just drag'n'drop the asset into the editor, done. Many AAA games use it now, and even more will use it in the future. It's not an artistic decision, it's business decision to use these assets, because, well, they're ready to use and look "just like in real life".

It's kind of grey-ish like it lacks color.

Correct it is very uninspiring. It's like they lacked the talent to come up with a great looking game so they just choose to not try at all.

If you bothered to understand basics like correlation of art-styles to story/world building themes you would get it alas Dunning-Kryger seems to be your best friend.

...the world it is in is supposed to be bleak and kind of hopeless. The palette reinforces that bleakness and sense of hopelessness.

I mean, they live in a world where it isn't even safe to travel a few miles to another little settlement without getting jumped by griffons, goblins, ogres and wyverns... and there is an immortal dragon stalking the world, randomly choosing people to become immortal dragon slayers to perpetuate a cycle of despair.

It ain't gonna look like My Little Pony, mate.

I'm and artist and i promise you buddy no creative person with respect for themselves would use Dragons Dogma 2 as an example of a great looking game.

You can make a bleak and overall very desaturated game and still make it look great, and the first dishonoured game is the perfect example of that.

We need to compare the color scheme of this game with Elden Ring

Elden Ring is an artistic masterpiece that managed to make the world feel as bleak as a world can possibly feel, but at the same time look incredibly beautiful.

Talking up Elden Ring while trashing this game...

Yeah, somehow I am not surprised you have garbage taste in games.

Indeed and they tried to cover up the terrible art direction with textured and effects that only helped flush the performance down the drain.

Now your projecting.

Not every game has to be like Elden Ring, but Elden Ring is objectively superior to Dragons dogma 2 in every way. From Software also didn't feel the need to include scummy micro transactions because they actually believe in their own product.

I know and Dragons Dogma 2 could really have used someone with artistic vision and talent like Viktor Antonov.

Elden Ring is objectively inferior in every way. Graphics, gameplay, combat, storytelling (and DD storytelling is poor), art design...

From Soft hasn't made a good game in over a decade and a half.
