Can someone explain to me how the save system works?
I bought the game but haven't started it yet. I've been reading a lot about performance issues, the one save slot/new game issue, and MTX.

Let's ignore them for now. Those topics been done to death. What I really want to know is the way saving works in this game. I'm talking about auto-saves, manual saves, inn, campfire, death, reloading, etc.

I've read some people being screwed over by this. Can someone explain to me how it actually works and all the scenarios that people can encounter with the current save system?

i don't know if I want to cry or smash something, i thought i ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up a quest, so I reloaded from an inn save and it was a save made when i was lvl 2, during the quest i thought i ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up i was lvl 11 or something and poof, 5 hours of gameplay just gone for ♥♥♥♥♥ and giggles. nice, what a clown save system.

From everything I've done so far, I've only loaded from the last save. But you can also reload from an Inn. The game has save points automatically, but they only happen every so often or on big quest points. If I'm entirely honest, I don't even know what to look for to tell when an autosave happens... SO you can also pause the game, and do a manual save at nearly any time. There's some events that can trigger an exception. One point that sucked for me in a newbie phase when things were time sensitive, is I found out the hard way you can't save with bad effects on your character. I ate a rotten food item, and wandered around a village wondering when it would just wear off, only to be wasting my time. So I just hard quit, and thankfully it saved when I first returned to the village anyway, and I only lost the progress of doing stupid stuff with my inventory... like eating rotten stuff. However, one really stupid thing is you can't seem to just load straight off the game, like if you got stuck, you'd have to go through the trouble of quitting without a save, and doing it in the start menu. I could be mistaken, but swore even DD1 had a simple reload. Maybe I'm just missing something in the menus?

So yeah, save manually often. Inns apparently make for backup load points, and otherwise there's unreliable auto-save and loading from that autosave. And yes, it really, really, really, really, really sucks and makes zero sense that Capcom doesn't want an RPG of all games to have multiple save slots.

It works like you would think it would work, its just people are not used to only having one save slot.

Think about it like this.. there are 2 save states. Tavern/Inn & Manual/Auto. This means you can load your last tavern rest or your last auto/manual save. Whatever is the latest.

Some people will rest at an Inn (therefore creating their latest Inn save) and then play for 5 hours doing nothing but Manual/Auto saving. When they die, they are prompted with the option to go back to their latest Auto Save or back to their last Inn/Tavern save. Players like the gentleman above me clicked to go back to the Inn save and are upset because the game did what he asked it to do and reset him to his last Inn save which was 5 hours earlier.

Remember though, this is rougher than normal because there is only one save slot, so the save slot is then autosaved over therefor really sealing the deal.

-Rest at Inn = Back up save/load point.
-(Manual/auto) Save = The save that gets overridden constantly. Example when encountering an Ogre it will auto-save. Means your manual save u made 5 mins before is overridden.
I recommend to rest/save at Inn whenever u made X much progress that u don't want to lose and/or are planning taking on a tough fight/situation that will probably override manual/auto save and then you are risking getting stuck in a loop.

The game literally tells you to stay at inns in order to save your game. That one's entirely on you my dude. I don't know what you expected "reload last inn save" would do.

Thanks for explaining it. That makes more sense and I actually like how that sounds as it could enhance the tension.

Can you sleep at the home and load from last inn?

Another thing to take note of with the saves, is that dying and reloading your save from before the big fight... your maximum health will be reduced each time making that fight you lost to, a little bit more difficult every attempt.
So you'll only get so many attempts before you have to abandon it and sleep to recover your health before attempting it again.

With tough fights, I won't waste my wakestones. I will reload my saves upon death until I get a decent run against it, because the wakestone will fully restore your maximum health as if you had slept. If you use it when you're still only at 90%, it feels like a waste.

I really appreciate that info, I thought I was going a tad crazy when I died and came back with a half health thing. That said, feels like that kinda sucks. I get the idea of penalties, but penalties that actually make a hard fight harder... kinda feels like its a self-defeating cycle. Still, I can't really cry about it until I've faced a point that makes me say that. Maybe it "just works", I dunno.
