Do NOT do the 'Free the Magistrate' quest
I'm stuck with npc's and guards being forever hostile to me because of that quest.

For more information, none of the guards objected to me just walking into the jail. But as soon as I went to unlock the door to talk to the arrested Magistrate, the room full of guards turned hostile, beat me and arrested me.

Now after leaving the gaol and going back in, I could actually talk to the Magistrate but he won't leave unless I find him somewhere with lots of books. Apparently the solution is a priest outside, but he and all the guards in the city are now hostile to me if I get close to them.

I can't load an old save because the game runs on one save file that autosaves. Can't finish the quest.

That's not strictly correct; you have two save files. You should be able to reload to your last inn visit, which was hopefully before all of the guards aggroed on you.

Happened to me too, i don't know how but later it just went away after bribing the guards 2-3 times.

Well you can just make a different decision in new game plus. Dragons Dogma is built around being played multiple times to see the real end bosses and make different decisions.

I completed that quest just fine. Granted, I drew my weapons by accident and got aggroed that way, but if you have a ferrystone, you can use it to teleport back to the Rift Stone in the city = aggro goes away. Trick I learned in the first game

EDIT: To be able to use the ferrystone, you must either leave the city to the point where the guards stop chasing you, or otherwise get far enough away from them that the game thinks you are out of combat.

I received the key, went there, the guard before descending the stairs said he was waiting for me, then i got into the prison below. two guard are patrolling but they just didnt cared that i opened the door and talked/asked him to come with me.

Then i found the priest in the slums and did the quest normally without any issue... so i dont know what you did for them to aggro you lol

That is the reward for your irresponsible action!:steammocking:

Hey, just walk outside of the castle walls where your pawns are, I would go to the nearest bench to reset aggro and it worked every time. Make sure that you are going in at night and of course don't try to open the door in front of a guard, normally at night there are very few in the jail area. Now, I do want to recommend (because it happened to me) that once he agrees to go with you... just pick him up and carry him on your shoulders because his pathing is ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

If you leave the capital and walk away a fair distance, aggro should reset.

I aggroed 3 prison guards that were guarding the dude and murdered all of them, funnily enough the rest of the city didnt seem to care.

ATTENTION: JUST LET THE GUARDS ARREST YOU AND BRIBE THEM WHILE IN JAIL. THIS HALTS THEIR HOSTILITY. THANK YOU.

The guards spotted me inside while opening his door and tried to kill me but I just ran out of there and out of town and the guards weren't hostile on sight anymore. I did need to sneak past the guards in the gaol though but it didn't break my save.

The guards saw me and just let me go as I hauled the magistrate out over my shoulder.
