There's a Windows feature called Multiplane Overlay that can cause a number of weird issues with both AMD and nvidia cards. I was having an absolutely terrible time with this on my husband's machine (Radeon 7600), disabled MPO on his machine, and it's working without a hitch now. This is likely more geared for AMD users, and I don't have any nvidia hardware to try on.

Went from crashing after 1-4 minutes to over half an hour of stability now with this change.

As soon as he turned on the in-game v-sync implementation, it crashed again. Not saying it caused it, but... turned it back off and it's fine and dandy now, as well.
