Thief Steal ability seems bad?
So I was planning to go thief (I named my character Greirat after my favorite darksouls 3 character) and I read yesterday that the steal ability only works in combat, when using like a quick attack, and it takes items from the monster during combat that they would have dropped when killed.

So it doesnt net you anything, it just gets you items earler in combat?

I saw someone say the main use is getting items from bosses without killing them

Seems like a very small thing.

Anyway im mostly going thief because I didnt play DD1 and im scared of not having a dodge roll XD so i am gonna ease into this game with a safety net

Extra items farm maybe? Also enemy can do that too,
Some streamer got quest failed because NPC stole the quest item.

Idk about the steal ability but from the looks of it, Thief class should be a solid choice. Just make sure you have a good tank and healer to back you up.

I suspect you are misreading/misinterprting it. I doubt it just takes an item that would have dropped on death; rather it probably generates an item from the same 'drop table' or list of possible items that enemy could possibly drop on death.

So since you didn't play DD1, there is a steal ability in it. Two actually: Pilfer and then Master Thief. Master Thief gets you all the loot earlier if it succeeds(dice roll essentially), but you get no loot when you kill the enemy after that. The benefit of it was that it actually altered the loot table. Chances of getting rare drops went up, upgraded version netted you more loot. You could just only rob someone under specific conditions: if they're sleeping, your pawn is grappling them, or they're in the middle of spell-casting. In Dragon's Dogma, looting a healing potion off of an enemy in battle could make all the difference between a wipe or victory.

Outside BBI it was basically useless in DD:DA. And many would say it was only useful with the chained gore-cyclops as you could get level three gear easily by stealing from him before beating BBI the first time when they would start to become more common.
