Best main pawn to go with Theif?
I was thinking mage... But I have seen some other stuff that maybe something else would be better?

Depends on your play style. But I mostly go with one melee and one range. I am still not sure what I am going to choose for myself though. So yes mage is a good pick.
But a fighter does come in handy in a fight and most definitely if you use him/her as a tank.

Anything can work, even a thief pawn.

I nearly always start with mage so I go for fighter first off keep fighter when I go to Sorc and when I transition to advance classes like MA or MK switch them to Mage and later sorc for end game damage boost.

P.s any combo can work just hire what your missing in group

I didn't play the first one yet and I heard that game play is very different from other games in the genre, and I am kinda stuck between choosing Thief or Archer. Which one is more fun to play. I have played many games in the genre and always enjoyed playing a rouge with daggers or a mage but am also interested in the magick archer build.

I'm sure just about any comp could work.
Most optimal....I would stick with the tried and true, trinity.

1) Fighter (Tank) (using taunt, assuming it carried over from the first game)
2) Thief (DPS)
3) Mage (DPS/Support/Healer)
4) *Ranged DPS of some sort

In any scenario, having a mage as part of your team is invaluable. They are very versatile as they offer support across various aspects of gameplay. they have essential spells like High Halidom (From DD1) for debuff removal to enchanting weapons with magic. weapon enchants are especially useful when facing enemies immune to physical damage which you will be dishing out for the most part as a thief so this can be a life saver worst case scenario is just adds extra damage effects like burning if you have a fire enchant on your weapon for example. Also mages can heal. While non-magic users aren't useless, i feel they have less utility. For a well-rounded team, consider a thief, mage, sorcerer, and archer for good synergy.

That way you have 2 magic users and 2 physical users and your party has ranged capabilities with both magic and physical
