No rift crystals were in the original. you can collect them just by playing the game.

Have you ever played DD1? RC is used for the Rift, where you hire companions. In the Rift, you can hire companions that are even max level. There were a few ways you could gain RC outside of the game, but they were gained ingame at a modest income so you couldn't use OP companions to complete the game for you.

DD2 will likely utilize them more, since Denuvo requires the game to be Always Online, but in DD1 they were NEVER used for Pay 2 Win (aside from cheating via hiring Over Powered companions.

Live Service? I wager it will be as "Live Service" as ordinary game updates go. But it is an Online Only game due to Denuvo, so they might have other micro transactions to offset the cost.

If you were Steam/XBL/PSN friends with people with powerful Pawns you could hire them at extremely reduced prices (maybe 0RC? It's been a while) so you could still do it that way.

This reaction pretty much sums up the issue with a lot of modern gamers, react first, think second, could've just saved yourself the time and realized rift crystals were in the game, but nope lets whine in the forums.
