Use tripping to your advantage, it doesn't cause a lot of damage, but over time it can cause enough.
Come in with a drop kick and before you land and while they're still in the air, try and perform a projectile attack and you might catch the AI before they block.... you usually need to be very close to them before you hit the kick attack so that you're a fraction of a second from landing. This works great for Scorpion, as you can perform a close drop kick, then spear them while they're still in the air, uppercut than teleport punch all in one combo string.
Cheap hits is pretty much all you have for options.
If you give him a second, he'll fk you up.
It took me a decade to get very good at this game so it's not something where you can expect to get better in a few days. it takes dedication.
As for kintaro, there's no fair way of winning against him. he has a simple ai pattern though: step backward, step forward, jumpkick toward him. The trick here is to time your kicks so that he tries to attack you. either he spits a fireball at you or he tries to teleport-stomp you. if you hit him while he's teleporting, he'll tend to repeat his attack one or two times before trying something else so that makes it two or three free hits on him. DON'T JUMPKICK WHEN HE'S CORNERED. he'll block the hit and either hit or throw you and that spells trouble even at full health since if he throws you into the corner and then throws you back out of it, you'll have a huge chunk of health wasted because of that mistake.
Another ai pattern: mileena is the easiest to beat in the game: at the right distance, jump toward her. she'll jump backward and throw her sais at you in mid-air. if your distance is right, you'll jump right over them. after you avoid the sais just do a jumpkick and she'll get kicked away, and she'll do this almost every single time, so with a little practice you'll be getting double flawlesses against her. Just like with kintaro though, don't try to hit her when she's cornered. if she's cornered, just walk back for a while (she'll follow but won't attack), and repeat.
kung lao has a habit of teleporting right after the match begins. when the fight prompt appears, hold down. he'll either teleport behind you giving you a free uppercut on him or he'll try to jump kick you, letting you uppercut him out of it with a little timing.
baraka has a nasty habit of doing his blade saw move (where he kneels and swishes his blades up and down in a scissor motion) whenever you jump toward him. the trick is to either jump over him or right in front of him but out of reach of his blades. after that, you can use normal moves against him if you're behind him, but if you're in front of him you can only do projectile moves against him since if your character's body connects in any way with his blades, you'll be the one who gets hurt.
kitana does her fan lift move whenever you jump toward her so learn to fight without having to jump all the time, and time it so that the only time you allow yourself to try a jump kick is when she throws her fans at you since it's the only time when she's vulnerable for a jumpkick.
scorpion has a habit of throwing his spear at the beginning of a round. as always wait for fight prompt and then hold up and left to jump toward him so that as soon as you two can move, he'll go for his spear throw but you'll imediately jumpkick him which he can't avoid since he's in the middle of an attack. another trick is to bait him into throwing his spears so you can go for jump kicks.
Shao Kahn blocks almost everything but has a small delay before he counters your moves so an easy way to beat him is to simply time your jump kicks and hit him AS YOU START YOUR JUMP. if you jump over him or you jumpkick as you land, he'll have all the time in the world to counter, and even when you manage to block he still tears apart a good chunk of your health.
it's only a small bit of tricks but really the way to win in single player in the 2d MK games is:
observe, bait, react, exploit. the games don't play fair and neither should you. That's how I managed to do one-credit runs in MK1 and MK2.
If you need visual help, you can always watch my one-credit arcade run and take notes:
