Red Faction

Device creation failed!
Purchased a really great bundle pack of all the red factions. So I start up the first Red Faction to begin the story and ran into this problem:
Unable to initialize DirectX 8.0 -- Device creation failed!

File: D:\projects\rf_pc\vsdk\gr\directx\gr_direct3d.cpp - Line: 1891

It seems I can get the game to run on 600x800, but no higher resolution, with all the different boxes checked/unchecked. When I click on "update" from the game launch screen, it times out, so I guess steam keeps the game up to date. Any help would be greatly appreciated. DXdiag gives me no issues, my directx is the latest at 11, display drivers for my Radeon 6900 series is up to date, and I'm running windows 7 64 bit, kept up to date as well.

find the red faction folder in your steam folder. Then right click on the exe and go to properties, then go to compatibility and select XP service pack 2 as the compatibility mode. Then click administator button and set game to all users. then right click on the exe and selcet run in adminstator mode.

Thanks RageMojo, tried using your direct method in the install folder, with all different compatibility choices and running as admin, but still the same results. Maybe the game wasn't suppose to run higher than 600x800? All the more recent Red Factions, including II, work at max resolutions. Thanks for trying.

Did you also use the set up option on the pop up when you launch? I had my resolution set to 1024x768 which is the games max. I just played through the entire game in the last few days.

Yeah, that's what I had been trying to max higher than the 600x800. It gives me options for 1280x1024, 1024x768, 600x800, and 640x480. Selecting any option higher than 6x8 and going back and clicking "play" will result in "Error: Unable to initialize DirectX8.0 -- Device creation failed! File D:\projects\rf_pc\vsdk\gr_direct3d.cpp - Line: 1891. A critical error has occurred and the program cannot continue. Press OK to exit the program."

You rock, that worked great! I guess I was searching too specific of this issue when looking at the net. Glad I can play good ol RF in a higher definition now.
