That being said, some community servers (like ours - the FactionFiles.com DM pub) run "bots", which are effectively dumb clients running custom client software. Anyone can play with those bots if they wish, just by joining those public servers.
Also to quickly mention, if you plan to play multiplayer, I'd strongly recommend installing the Dash Faction patch. Even for single player it's highly recommended, but given all the bugs and security issues in the stock unpatched client, in multiplayer it really should be considered mandatory.
