Commonly caused by framerate. In addition the game never supported fps more than 30. Know it sounds crazy but that's the only issue discovered.

So ya, as the user posted above me, patch the game with DashFaction as it fixes more stuff on the game than just the submarine.

yes get the Dash faction patch you will not regret it. if you are unsure just google how to install dash faction red faction. it's very simple after you download it you open it and run a basic wizard. takes like a 2 minutes
total. i play the game locked at 120 with 4x my native 1080p. i probably couldnt do it without dash faction enabling certain things such as resolution on textures

Enable Vsync and/or limit your FPS

Just thought I'd add the link to Dash Faction to save anyone reading this thread a Google search. The Dash Faction installation instructions are available at: http://dashfaction.com :)

save the game before it explodes, then continue where you saved, the submarine will not explode. I had the same problem.

I tried ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ EVERYTHING. I tried capping the frame-rate. I tried overloading the processes on my computer so that the game would run slower. I tried button-mashing the ESC key....

None of it worked.

So, finally, I dropped the sub, and in the second after it dropped, but before it started to explode, I saved a new game file. And that did it.

I don't know if it will work for anybody else. But that was what I did on the play-through where the sub did not explode.

I'd just like to quickly mention that the de facto standard patch for the game (Dash Faction) completely resolves this issue, with no work required on your part aside from installing the patch. The (extremely simple and straightforward) instructions are listed on http://dashfaction.com

No capping frame rate, no trying to get the game to run slower, no strategically placing quicksaves, no mashing the escape key, nothing - just the game working properly. This bug is also far from the only critical bug with the game that is fixed by Dash Faction. Obviously the choice is yours, but there's a reason why Dash Faction is the de facto standard in the community :P

In game change the video settings to low, press the button and change back to high when the submarine is in the water. This worked for me after a lot of frustration, I hope it works for you too.

here's what worked for me: just mash the quicksave button after pressing the button until the sub lands.

For anyone facing this problem who happens to come across this thread, I put together a video walkthrough showing how to fully resolve the problem with no need for wonky workarounds:
