Is the multiplayer dead?
Curious.

No, not at all. It's less active than it was 15 years ago for sure, but we still get 20+ players regularly for our biweekly Red Faction Community Game Night events, which we've been running for almost a year now. :)

You should join the Red Faction Community Discord - the community lives there and it's way more active than you probably expect :P Red Faction 1 is by far the most active game in the series (despite being the oldest).

You can join the community Discord by clicking here: http://rfchat.com

Some people always assume the multiplayer dead, when they don't bother patching the game beforehand.

I just played my first round since I played it on PS2 I don't remember the game being so fast, felt like playing unreal tournament but maybe it was just the server settings? It was neat, but too fast.

It was definitely a server setting then. people were running around like sonic.

That's not a server setting. Speedy players isn't even a feature in multiplayer. Online experience may vary in different ways than singleplayer. What you may have discovered is a modded server. Try playing in a non-modded server and see the difference.

If you're running unpatched the only thing I can think of is geomodding.

I am not aware if pure faction or dash faction to this date fixes it but there was a time Pure faction stopped geomodding.

And no, You dont need a modded server for that. Your server can be rtunning clean (1.2 etc), and still get those.

As far as I know 1.2 still allows geomodding.

? GeoMod is environmental destruction, and is in the engine itself (all versions). GeoMod doesn't in any way affect the movement speed of players. The game itself rarely works properly on modern systems without Dash Faction[dashfaction.com], though. It's very possible that players running the official (non-Dash) version of the game could be warping around in multiplayer games, since the game doesn't run properly. Those players should install Dash Faction, as it would likely fix their issue. :)

Pure Faction has never "stopped" geomodding - there is a configurable option for server hosts (in all versions) though, to limit it in their servers. In Dash Faction, this limit can also be configured via console command on the server. You can read about all Dash Faction console commands here: http://redfactionwiki.com/wiki/Red_Faction_Console_Commands#Dash_Faction

That was a game tracker that was active 10 years ago, it no longer works. Following the steps in that guide nowadays would effectively break your game - you won't be able to see _any_ servers :P

You should install Dash Faction (http://dashfaction.com), and during the installation, leave the tickbox selected to switch your multiplayer tracker to rfgt.factionfiles.com - that's the community tracker, and all the public servers in the game are using it. :)
