why exactly am i fighting a t34 when i've literally just started? (the t34 is tier 3 and i am tier 1)

If you have a tier 2 weapon equipped you are queued as tier 2. Make sure you only have tier 1 stuff equipped.

Also, when you select the army you want to queue with, look at the red / orange button for joining the queue.

The button will tell you the BR bracket which you are going to be facing with the current lineup of equipment and vehicles you have on your squads.

it was my 3rd match so no, the only thing i had was all tier 1

it said tier 1-tier 2 which doesnt explain the tier 3 t34

How matchmaking works is this:

It will first try to make a game with +1 or -1 Battle Rank based on the BR that you are equipped (will use the highest BR among all weapons and vehicles you have. Note: BR is separate from Tiers).

If insufficient players are found with a couple minutes (happens at times) it will resort to the old format: depending on your BR equipped, you will fall into either a BR 1 - 3 match or a BR 3 - 5 match.

Note: the first 1 - 3 games (depends on your performance) are New Player Matchmaking which you will face only other new players and full bot controlled squads.
