Now there are only some mild random purchase elements. At least you can buy specific weapons and soldiers. Apparently, Belgium still considers it to be lootboxes, though.
Regardless of all that, the game still regularly feels like it isn't something that was designed to be played, not with any specific plan in mind. Just a bunch of trendy stuff thrown together with a cash shop on top. Too much fits poorly together, too much can go wrong and therefore does when you face humans and not just bots.
P.S. And I say that as someone who thinks gacha games can be enjoyable if done right. (Also as someone who apparently defends the game too much. No idea how anyone could get that idea.)
They plan to add gacha for old squads i dunno if it will be paid or event for most active players.
Some of their monetization decisions were weird like Soviets only having only one free paratrooper squad you need to pay for 2nd one, while Americans have 2 event paratroopers and one premium, Germans 2 event and 1 premium and Japan only one mediocre event paratroopers with no premium. In the past some of the most iconic tanks were locked behind paywall like Chi-ha and Jagdpanther for no reason. Both of those were free in WT.
I still play the game because it's one of it's kind, HLL is too focused on maps being too huge and forcing you to cooperate with your team that doesn't want to cooperate, milsims are not for me plus in Enlisted you can find not just most famous vehicles and weapons but also ones that were prototypes, which game let you to play with Type 100 LMG? yeah not a single game.
Gacha is not p2w since everyone has access to it every time they log in.
That's just how f2p games stay afloat as a bare minimum.
What I would suggest is playing free to play until a 50% off sale on premium, then buy a year of premium. Premium also allows you to take in two vehicles in your match loadouts.
As for the grind, it's almost entirely based on how good you are at shooters even with premium. If you're the type of guy to get four kills and die ten times, you will suffer. If you are able to break even and get a couple dozen kills, this game won't feel like a grind. That said premium still helps a lot.
Gaijin model isn't shady in my opinion it's just a f2p model that every f2p game uses. The "oh you can play for free but you need a subscription" is industry standard for f2p. I could actually be here for two hours still naming f2p titles that do that (because it is all of them).
At least Enlisted isn't locking content behind paywalls like Runescape or other f2p mmos.
