does anyone have an idea of how the car damage works? at first i tought your car gets damage as you crash against barriers, obstacles and other cars, but watching replays seems that your car paint gets damage over time as you race, independently if you crash or not, so can anyone can tell how the damage works?

From what i read, the damage system is only a visual indicator

It's only visual. The more you run into things and reset your car, the more wear and tear is shown on the cars ranging from finger prints to even scratches.
