S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky

Low FPS on a powerful PC.
Not sure what's going on, but my fps is only about 35 - 45 even on medium settings. If I put it on high it runs at about 15 fps. I can play pretty much any game to date at max settings running at 60 fps, but for some strange reason, Clear Sky runs slow. Any ideas? Also, I can run Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat completely maxed out at 60 fps with ZERO lag and no hiccups.

Turn AA down to 2x or off if you're using it. When you change this setting you aren't warned that it requires a restart, but it actually does. So I thought since my beefy machine can handle a lot it could take a measly 4x AA, but 4x AA was the biggest performance hog in CS.

Also, turn down sun rays. They really hurt perf during the hours of 6am to 9am, which is about the time you start in the game.

I'm not trying to be an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but my PC is more than capable of playing Clear Sky on Max settings. I just built it 2 months ago and spent 2 grand on it. I promise it has more than enough power to run it on any settings.

A lot of it has to do with certain games not being optimized with newer cards and dx11. It happens with me and company of heroes. Ive got a i7 3770k and gtx 670, yet was only getting avg 23 fps on ultra while someone with a gtx 560 was getting 150+ avg fps. Doesnt make sense to me, but changing terrain detail and shader from ultra to high got me 60 avg fps. I can garuntee you will not see the difference of ultra to high shader settings...If that doesnt work try installing the complete mod and see if it runs any smoother...

Post your CPU, ram ammount and GPU along with what drivers and OS you are using if you want help. Otherwise you can complain all you want and no one can do anything to save you from yourself.

Sorry I just got off work.

i7 - 3820 OC to 4.2
16gb of DDR3 2400
GPU GeForece GTX 480 1.5gb ver OC to 900mhz
Most current drivers for gpu, ver 310 came out Dec 17
Asus Rampage IV extreme edition mobo
Win 7 64bit ultimate with SP 1 up to date

I checked Call of Pripyat and Clear Sky. Both games are set to maximum settings and Clear Sky will not run above about 20 fps where as Call of Pripyat runs (with my fps limit off) between 90 ~ 160 fps, but never drops below 90 fps no matter where I am, or what's going on (weather, sun etc,.) but Clear Sky doesn't even get 40 fps inside a building. I've even tried Clear Sky on Meduim settings and it still will oonly get about 45 fps.

Are you using Direct X 10.1 in Clear Sky? 10.1 is extremely buggy. Set the game to x10
Guardic 2 ENE 2013 a las 13:28
Yeah, I tried both. Apparently, it has something to do with Direct X 10. I tried changing to Direct X 10 on Call of Pripyat and I have the same problems as Clear Sky. But in Call of Pripyat, I can select Direct X 11 and the game runs perfectly, 60+ FPS. So I think my card doesn't like DX 10. I guess I'll just have to play with Enhanced Full Dynamic Lighting without DX 10.

1. CS requires more powerful PC than ShOC and CoP (CoP has worse textures for reduce performance), so it MUST run worse than CoP and, of course, ShOC.
2. I don't think that GTX480 is enought for CS, also I don't think that nVIDIA 4xx is good for play games on DX10/11 because of its termal problems, especially when we talk about games such as CS (which requires more powerful videocards).
3. You can download Clear Sky benchmark[files.gsc-game.com] to find the best settings for you PC configuration.

P.S. So, I don't think that you should play on DX9, cuz' there is too much pretty effects on DX10.

Yoloch, the benchmark is a nice tool thanks. Those sun shafts really take a toll on my system, even with a gtx 670 and i73770k my avg fps(only on the sunshafts set to ultra) was as low as 50. All my max fps on each test was 100-180 though. I wonder if the complete mod will put even more stress on the system for lower fps than vanilla...

With my modest gt540m I played Crysis on high detail good, but with Clear Sky I had to remove the dynamic lighting for play it an acceptable fps. What a shame!

So I guess it's just poorly optimized?

X-Ray Engine (all S.T.A.L.K.E.R. serie) is bad-optimized. I can tell you, that in CIS (Russia, Ukraine) Clear Sky was released 6 months before rest of the world, so we had got REAL beta-test for our money. After patch 1.5.06 CS lets you finish the game (6 patches were needed for see the end titles), but there're still some problems. It's not a question of optimization - it's a question of a real bug-game (but I think, CS is the most interesting game from STALKER franchise on the other hand).

I got the same problem, I always expect older games to work better on my PC.

The fact it runs slower is normal. Clear Sky is a very demanding game, has much better graphics than CoP and SoC.
On max settings CS is a graphic jewel, the level of realism and lighting detail is unmatched, so yes it will be a problem even for very powerful PCs.

What is not normal is not getting over 20 fps on max settings.
im using a gtx 580 now, but i used a 480 before, never overclocked, core i7 2600k at standard 3.4ghz and hyperthreading turned off, and 8gb of ddr2 1600.
Game runs smooth at maxed settings and 1600x1200 resolution, fps according to fraps is between 30-60 depending on place and light conditions.
The only time when i get below 20fps is in the first camp around 8am game time, because of the insane amount of shadows and sunray effects which are superb but costly.

You might try getting rid of all that overclocking, sometimes overclocking makes things worse instead of better.
