Why was it awful? MISSIONS SOLVED THEMSELVES. You never even had to play the game. You could just stare at a tree all game long, and watch the game win it for you.
You see, this game has a dynamic system where you might be given a mission to help take out a tiny outpost here, or defend one there, or rescue some guys on the road nearby... things like that. Those are side missions, and they are bad. Because you could get near one, and before you can do anything to help out you'll get a "mission failed" warning. Or worse, "mission cancelled". Why? I don't know. I once got a mission to help out some guys that were literally in sight when I received the mission. Before I walked 20 feet in their direction, the mission cancelled. This repeated over, and over, and over.... I'd get half a dozen mission requests EVERY MINUTE. 95% of them you can't complete or even participate in, even those you think you would be able to.
But those are side missions. What about the main missions? Bad luck.... those can be won or lost by the AI without you being involved as well! The first one (I think it was to liberate an oil refinery?), if you run to it at the very first opportunity, you'll make it before the AI does anything... but you'll lose because you don't even have the gear you need yet. If you spend half an hour getting prepared, picking up a little cash to afford more than a pistol and a shirt, the AI solves it for you.
I even tried playing past that, and moved on to the next level / area, but the problem repeated itself: get a mission, watch the AI achieve it. And the next area had 3 or so main story objectives, so I got the opportunity to watch the AI solve all of it, without me even lifting a finger.
So... TL;DR version: its a very bad game because it plays itself. "You" are completely irrelevant. You'll have just as much fun in this game if you DON'T play it.
