Yes, the whole trilogy is an open World post apocalypse game. You should start with the 1st one.

Which one is the first one? What can you do or is it pretty much just story?, like is there any other random events that happen?

Shadow of Chernobyl is the 1st one. Also there are side quests, and stuff like that. It's like Fallout NV, but more intense gun fights. Watch a review.

Shadow of chernobyl can be considered a non-linear survival horror FPS with RPG elements. most is open world but there is levels with scripted sequences.

Call of Pripyat is the most open world of the 3 games, and it's the 3rd one in the series. CS (my personal fav) is probably the least open world, but i think has the best gameplay. Its very challenging, but this one includes the weapon and armor upgrades that SoC didnt have. There are saide objectives to do, some of which are very beneficial (looking at you FLAME artifact).

You play DayZ and I have only seen videos of that.

I'm guessing the game has common traits. It's you, your weapons and what's in your backpack. Try to balance out what you need and stay alive while doing so. There is always going to be a main objective to head you in the right direction. Same with the story, just letting you know why you are doing what you are doing.

I completed the first game, but only have ten hours in on this one. Not much more I can tell you.

Yes, open world.
Clear Sky is the prologue of ShoC then CoP comes by story.

So yea, maybe play CS first because of the story.

Yes it is, by the story.

I'm actually playing SoC and ClearSky vanilla side by side, and its a very interesting way to play because the story kind of interconnects.
