What guns are worth upgrading?
My main guns are currently the Akm 74/2 and the TRs, but I've been holding off on upgrading them (even though I have plenty of money), in anticipation of better guns down the line.

Should I bother getting a few upgrades for these rifles, or should I save my money for something better, and if so, what guns would you recommend?

I always get at least the weight reduction upgrade for any gun im currently using. You can always just have a stash of all your guns and choose to upgrade as many as you want so its personal preference. If you have the money then why not?

All the guns are pretty effective in stalker so it comes down to which you like the best. SInce i use most full autos on semi auto i tend to go for the guns with the best iron sights above all other properties. For example i prefer an SKS to an AK-47 just because of the sights.

Ammo and Money is stupid easy to get in Clear Sky so don't worry about those. Let factions kill each-other and loot the spoils like a vulture. You will eventually be able to upgrade everything and keep it in the stash at the neural base safe next to the jail cell. The only 2 artifacts you ever need are 1 bubble and 1 goldfish. Once you get both, you can sell the rest at the science outpost in Yantar for big bucks.

=General=

Early Game: CS-1 Body Armor modified for kevlar + Viper 5 modified for fire rate + Fora modified for accuracy + 9x19mm (Let the Viper 'walk' up your target from the sternum and you'll get a headshot every time)

Mid Game: CS-1 Body Armor modified for kevlar + AC96/2 modified for accuracy + Kora-919 modified for accuracy (TRs 301 has a better scope but jams too much)

Late Game: Bulat Skat-9 Armor modified for ceramic + Scoped SA Avalanche modified for accuracy + Kora-919 modified for accuracy (SIG 5K has less bullet drop-off and a bigger clip but is louder and uses a weaker calibur ammo so I prefer the Avalanche)

=Zone=

Red Forest: SPSA14 modified for rate of fire + Kora-919 modified for accuracy (1 shot for dogs + psudodogs and 2 shots snorks + bloodsuckers)

Military Warehouses: SVUMK2 fully modified for the fight with the military (fire rate and reload speed matter here)

Bridge / Limansk: Exoskeleton fully modified + RP-74 fully modified + AMMO (do not use the tank machinegun it is trash. short controlled bursts while low crouching can even kill the sniper up on the hill easy. take about 1400 rounds then you can ditch it in the city for something else since you can't go back after the bridge)

Hope this helps

I personally enjoy the Sig 5k and the G37....always thought Freedom had the best guns. The Avalacnhe is a good choice as well, but the ammo is very heavy compared to the 5.56.

If you're playing vanilla CS AKS-74M (Akm-74/2 in game) is all you need. Just make sure you use the AP ammo (black stripe on the ammo box) and you'll cut down all of the mid-armored stalkers in a short burst. Upgrade it with recoil, accuracy upgrade tree and optical scope mount (PSO-1). It is far more reliable than any other rifle in game, cheap to maintain while remaining highly effective.
You can also try affiliating with Freedom in order to gain the Dragunov sniper which will make the final parts of the game very easy.

Hmm, maybe ammunition has big effect, im still searching for exact numbers.. I had AK96/2 fully upgraded and it was killer, switched to Tunder and it seems to have much less damage even after upgrade and im not sure why.. only ammunition could be explanation, otherwise there is something wrong with game weapons stats.

I got through the entire game with the CS-1 and whatever guns I picked up along the way. I didn't even have any money after the mugging in Garbage

Its not in any guide, nut lots of "good" weapons are no so good, because they are occuping too much of screenspace..

I'm about to blow your mind right now: you aren't the only person who has this question on this _14 year old_ game. It does not matter when the question was asked.

All the AK guns that use 5.45 ammo are junk in my opinion. Not only are they the least accurate even after fully upgrading but the firing pattern is sporadic and choppy sounding like the gun is struggling to spit out the bullets. There's good reason they are the cheapest guns in the game. The best overall assault rifle in Shadow is the GP37, but the most powerful is the Tunder. The Tunder would be the best overall gun except for the drawbacks which include no scope, 20 round mag, and the 9.39 ammo which is very heavy making it impractical to carry larger quantities. Strangely the Tunder was made less powerful and less accurate in Clear Sky.
