I'll work of the basis that you havent installed any mods, but I highly recommend you install Sky Reclaimation project.
In the Swamps your goal is simply to help Clear Sky to defeat the renegades, you'll be overwhelmed with missions that'll have you running backwards and forwards across the map on attack / defend quests but eventually even without your help Clear Sky will take over the great swamps. At this point you'll be able to leave to get a guide from the south east village and go to Cordon. It's here where the Story actually picks up.
The best weapons to use Early on IMO are.
TOZ Huntingshotgun with buckshot on Mutants, other than dogs.
Viper 5 SMG on Renegades, Bandits and Stalkers in general combat (and dogs).
Any 9x18 pistol if you got solid cover to just plink away at enemies with relative safety.
It's handy to keep a PB1S silenced pistol on your person to attempt stealth takedowns at VERY close range but it is not a reliable pistol for combat.
You'll only start to find 5.54 ammo in greater quatities when you make it to the Garbage map, untill that point refrain from using AK's on anyone other than the millitary, they are the only enemies wearing armour that the Viper 5 is ineffective against.
When it comes to loot, take it and sell it all at traders.
Avoid walking near Bandit squad near map exists in Garbage, If you walk too close they'll ask you to have a chat with them then demand payment from you and if you refuse they'll turn hostile, if you kill them it turns the entire bandit faction aginst you too. So long as you walk away from (not around them) them you can ignore their request. The guards by Agroprom cannot be bypassed without turning hostile, but you can avoid combat with them by going over the train tunnel thus keeping the rest of the bandits neutral.
There is an unavoidable scripted event where you get knocked out by bandits upon entering 'Fang's Hideout'. The bandits will steal all your money and weapons. You can get the weapons back, but not the money, so make sure you spend it all before you trigger the sequence.
And as a general rule for vannilla Clear Sky, all enemies will throw grenades at you the second they lose sight of you, and I do mean all enemies, the very second the lose sight of you, and litterally at your feet. NEVER stand still outside period, if you have to hide and reload, run away and do it. Even when you think you're well out of range, don't stop because they throw grenades like they have portable motars.
theres a box at the flea market? (like right above the place where u go in) save, put all your stuff in, get knocked out, immediately check if your stuff in is in the box. if yes grab it. The thiefs will be on the map as a pointless sidequest, so just mow them down so they dont annoy you when you are checking the map
if bandits are neutral I'd say go neutral on the first playthru , dont join anyone.
If you go with freedom you will bump into a duty (they are enemies with eachother) squad at the red forest , if you go duty you cant get help from freedom when assaulting a military base + theres freedom at the entrance to the military warehouse map (they might drop a noice sniper tho)
only go bandits if you are good at the game , seriously. its slightly buggy (read about that a bit before doing it) + you literally make enemies everywhere
faction war rewards : loners - bubble artifact + seva suit
freedom - exoskeleton and a sniper and idk I forgot some ammo??
duty - useless but sells for a good price machinegun with tons of ammo + maybe armor? idk
bandits - honestly dont know
1. This is first chronologically and first game I started so you shouldn't need any background story. Beginning pretty much explains everything.
2. Use Sky Reclamation Project Mod. It will fix any game breaking bugs pretty much and best for the most vanilla experience.
3. You can sell Vodka for 100 each and you can make a good amount of money selling food to bartenders as well
4. Good first rifle to get and upgrade is the Hunting Rifle. You will want to get ammo upgrade which makes it harder to get ammo but its a long range shotgun thats accurate.
5. Play on harder difficulty for better damage and less spread. Difficulty affects both you and AI in this game. I would recommend the second highest difficulty for new players.
Generally you don't need to get too close too any anomalies when going about your travels, but they are the only place to find artifacts (though you can find artifacts in stashes and as quest rewards).
Artifacts are like powerups that you can equip to your suits if they have containers for them. Some artifacts have incredibly useful effects such as being able to negate radiation and increase carry weight, all of them can be sold at traders for 1000, 2500 or 5000, how much is based on the quality but generally speaking you don't want to sell the best artifacts you find.
In order to find them you need to use a detector and look for them in Anomalies, they spawn at random and every few in game days, so you can farm them indefinately. I suggest looking at the STALKER wiki page to see where to get artifacts from in CS. But off the top of my head the Goldfish artifact is one of the best.
That being said, you can safely beat the game without picking up or using a single artifact.
seva suit - bad bullet protection, but 5 artifact containers and good everything else
exoskeleton - you cant run but it has a nice carry capacity + I think self healing too
bulat - I dont think you can put artifacts on it but has perfect bullet protection
or as soon as you spawn RUN to the second big rock, what covers u fully even while standing
wait for the gun to stop firing, look to your left, you'll see a hole in the fence
sprint
the Zone and I go way back so i'm playing on Master difficulty (which I'd argue makes the games much much better). Clear Sky was always the black sheep of the series for me but for some reason it's clicking for me now. anyway now that i'm unstuck i can hopefully appreciate the rest of it
on Master, trying to run to the rock is by far the worse solution of the two. even one bullet grazing you will make you bleed to death really quickly. it might be theoretically workable, but it's much easier to simply take the other entrance to the cordon.
important : if you go thru the other entrance avoid stalkers until you get to the village
that's all the spoilering i'm gonna do, i'm much further into the quests now and picking up steam. this game is really great, i like that it has the more open environments of SoC, more conducive to wandering around, but with a lot of the quality of life improvements that would make CoP so good later on
