The Viper 5 shares ammo with pistols that the renegades, Bandits and Loners use, meaning ammunitiion is plentiful. It's cheap, light weight, reliable, has a high RoF and is accurate enough against the targets I named above purely because they do not have body armour. Arguably the best weapon to use in the Marshes and Cordon except against the Army.
The AKM is good, but the AC96 is better with upgrades, that can be found on some of the Millitary guards in the Cordon base, I strongly suggest you do not use either of these guns against anyone but the millitary early on, not just because they have armour which makes the Viper useless, but because they're your only real source of ammo for these guns (The ammo is not rare once you reach Garbage). The AC96 is something you can use for the rest of the game once you upgrade it, if you feel like it.
Pistols, like the Viper 5 really, only use them on bandits due to them being weak.
Cursoray mention, You can find Tr103's and IL85's around, good for single shooting and limited use but do not stick with them as they degrade and brake stupidly fast. Ammo is also fairly limited too early on (common in Garbage).
The VINTAR BC is the best weapon you can find early on, but you won't find much ammo for it till later on. But it's good to carry one around if you can scrape together 10 rounds, just because it's the best ranged accuracy weapon you'll find.
Best weapons to look out for are the SA Avelanch, SGI, GP37 and FT200M. There is also a Legendary AKM which is ungodly powerful, but you have to find that yourself through quests.
The SPSA is a sidegrade to the Chaser 13, i prefer it but it's not strictly an upgrade.
As for Armour, the CS1 is the best to use early on stick with that..
The best suits to look out for overall is the SEVA Suit, Bulat armour and Exosuit.
SEVA for world protection, possiby best overall armour in the game once if you manage to fully upgrade it. (this requires you to not be enemies with Bandits so you can enter their base and use their technician) You can get this in the Cordon Area relitively early on, but be warned this thing is like tissue paper in a firefight so avoid shooting with it.
Exo for combat, but be warned. You cannot sprint using this armour and whth grenade happy enemies this can be a huge liability. It's also expensive.
Bulat for middle ground between both. Comes with built in Night Vision too and with suit upgrades you can carry 2 artifacts.
